Decided to run my ebikes on solar

no, it is not. in fact the state encourages rainwater capture and use for irrigation and other non potable uses. AB-1750 “rainwater capture act” expressly allows the collection of rainwater without a permit.

i will probably see 50 cargo bikes today…

    Weird Specialized discovery....

yep! everyone i know who is into serious road riding or mtb also just generally loves bikes and has a commuter, a clunker, a cargo if they have kids, etc. it’s about the bike being fit for the purpose and enjoyable to ride for that purpose. for long, spirited road roads that means light and aero...

    Weird Specialized discovery....

yes, agreed! personally i do think that there's a big improvement to the ride experience with electronic shifting. carbon frame and wheels too, but perhaps that's a "if you don't know what you're missing thing," no doubt the CUES alloy diverge at $2100 (US) is more than most people need, very...

    Weird Specialized discovery....

given the state of the industry, i'm actually surprised they've come out with as many new models as they have. you could see the creo 2 as a bit of capitulation to a shrinking market - while other brands have both road and gravel e-bikes, specialized only has one. i was very surprised to see an...

    Weird Specialized discovery....

they generally make nice bikes. i like some of them a lot, others not so much, that’s about it for me. why (beyond some deep seated insecurity) it’s so important to anyone to think the brand is amazing- or horrible - is beyond me.

    Weird Specialized discovery....

about half the bikes i see on any given ride are specialized of one sort or another…. i don’t think you can judge the attitude of tens of thousands of people based on one or a few online. they sell bikes ranging from 500 to 15000… the truly snobby brands are never even mentioned on this site lol.

Lady cyclist killed in Davis involving juvenile on ebike...on the bike path.

nope, it’s not. it’s because of selfish adults who equate laws which define public responsibility to tyranny. it’s ok, i’m sure they’ll all be just fine building their own complete societies, roads and electricity and all, with their bare hands once this one collapses. they’re all self made men!

Lady cyclist killed in Davis involving juvenile on ebike...on the bike path.

it’s not “tyranny” to enforce the rules. i’m pretty sure most governments which build roads on public property for the public to use will impound motor vehicles which are repeatedly used illegally on said public roads. it seems like some people want no restrictions on the bikes themselves and...

Spooked by recent recalls - Are these battery charging cabinets worth the investment?

better, IMO, to only buy quality products from reputable manufacturers (who have a lot to lose - not some company without operations and resources in country), treat them well, use only the original charger, and charge in the garage. when i was building heavy lift drones i used the charging...

Cheap e-bike maker refuses recall as CPSC tells riders to get rid of it immediately

i don’t have all that much sympathy for someone who thinks that a $500 electric bike is legit. yes, they shouldn’t be using fake logos and selling an unsafe product but does anyone really think an entire vehicle like this - battery, motor, tires, frame, etc for $500 could possibly be anything...

Odd mapping omission in Specialized app [SOLVED]

idk if android is similar to iPhone but i bet it is, and the location services are provided by the OS using best-available information, including maps, wifi proximity, cell pings, and (mostly) GPS. you can definitely get good location without cell service and i'd be very surprised if android...

Lady cyclist killed in Davis involving juvenile on ebike...on the bike path.

fun as hell, no doubt. pretty much any fast, nimble open air vehicle is going to be a blast. i have an electric scooter that my daughter and i ride to school most days, i’m sure it’s illegal in some way… but we ride in the lane, like a car. they definitely don’t belong on shared paths and bike...

2026 - Our Rides in Words, Photos, Maps and Videos

i literally couldn’t ride anywhere unless i drove there first 😂 i’ve found that there’s something inherently different about going uphill - the same power output always results in a higher heart rate!

2026 - Our Rides in Words, Photos, Maps and Videos

glad you appreciated it! its hard adjusting to 1) staying so much closer to home and 2) never ever riding hard. a few years ago this would have been a very short ride and I’d have done it on the aethos in less time at 220 human watts… today on the addict I kept my average output to 130w or so...

2026 - Our Rides in Words, Photos, Maps and Videos

i haven't done one of these in a while because i've not been able to do the big rides i liked so much, but it was such a beautiful day i figured i'd share! this ±32 mile loop has about 2,000 feet of climbing, and a cool mix of urban, park, coast, hill, etc. the first few minutes are too steep...

    Another new TQ motor: hpr40

wind blowing down a hill is just horrible. it’s quite rare here since the hills tend to block the wind, but the occasional hot, dry “diablo” winds which blow out of the cursed Central Valley and set everything on fire make for miserable hill climbing in parts of the Bay Area. I got stuck in it...

My 2020 Creo Expert with 20K road miles, its been a great bike. Is it worth it to upgrade to 2025 Expert?

for road, no. definitely not, unless you need more power. the creo 1 had good geometry and clearances for road. if you’re feeling the itch to upgrade, maybe a new one piece cockpit, tires, saddle? carbon cranks, lighter pedals? I enjoyed all those upgrades on my creo. if you’re reallllly...

    Another new TQ motor: hpr40

so many of the reviews of the HPR40 bikes are from the UK, it’ll be very interesting to see how the motor fares at 25+ kph. in the UK these motors are basically only for hills. even with my much reduced output / exertion levels I go faster than that with no motor, and I’m certain all the people...

Lady cyclist killed in Davis involving juvenile on ebike...on the bike path.

the statistics from marin county i referenced are the injury rate, not the total number of injuries. of course total number of injuries is a meaningless statistic without knowing how many riders there are!!
