    The bike business

I am very sorry to hear of your experience. Being ten years younger than you, I can already appreciate the ever-increasing challenge of hoisting a 50+ lb ebike around. To avoid unnecessary 1 hour, 20 minute trips to my Trek dealer, I have equipped myself with a good Park stand and the tools...

How many miles do you have on your ebike?

9100 kms since July 2020. The bike has been absolutely flawless other than issues I caused. Still enjoying every day I can get out.

    Work Stand for the STEP-THRU

My Verve +3 works well in a Park PCS-10.2. I remove the seatpost entirely to lose the weight of it and the seat bag, and clamp below the struts to the back hub, on the tube that the seatpost goes into. Seems to pivot quite steadily and feels solid. Also works on the seatpost itself, but this is...

They grow from as small as these to a foot or two in diameter. If they are very white inside with a texture like fine white bread (no gills, no dark yellow, green or dark colour) they are puffballs and edible. They don’t last long, so be sure they are white inside.

Riding through my nearby Pinery Ontario Provincial Park… found some puffballs along a trail on the way home… very good fried up. Fall is creeping in now. Soon there will be lots of colour in the leaves.

    Winter e-biking advices

I’m considering trying my prescription scuba diving goggles that I keep on my sailboat for the summer, for winter biking in snowfall. If they work, I wouldn’t need to wear my glasses under them.

    Verve+ Dropped Chain

I have a Verve + 3, and the chain has dropped off the drive ring to the inside two or three times , usually when I downshifted too many low gears going up a short incline. It really, really gets jammed in there. I have been unable to extract it a couple of times without breaking the chain at the...

    Home repair... manuals and manageable?

This has been a week of bike changes/overhaul/maintenance. But the results are positive. I pulled an old Schwinn ebike out of the garage, cleaned it up and put it on facebook for free… the battery didn’t work. A friend picked it up, took it to a local shop who sent it away for new NiCads. Works...

What's a good suspension seatpost plus seat option?

I did buy a shim from Redshift as the post on my Trek was wider than the new suspension one. Works well. I prefer to ride with my legs fully extended, so that my foot is flat on the lower pedal when sitting on the seat… seems most comfortable and is the recommended fit most dealers will aim for.

What's a good suspension seatpost plus seat option?

I am only 5’2” and the Redshift works well for me… but on a different bike admittedly. It’s 2 or 3” from bottomed out. Doesn’t help though if your seat is already fully lowered I guess.

    Home repair... manuals and manageable?

Just did a full overhaul on my bike after a breakdown on a sandy trail… chain got so jammed inside the chainring next to the motor that I had to break it, then reassemble it to get going again. End result was an oily, sandy chain and gears that looked guaranteed to wear fast. Decided to start...

More comfortable saddle for Trek Verve+3

Just switched my Bontrager Boulevard seat onto my Norco DS bike... it looks and feels perfect there! Installed a new Brooks B17 on the Trek, after treating it with Proofide. 30 km ride today, it’s a bit hard, but not that uncomfortable. Hopefully broken in soon!

More lovely rides in the neighbourhood and nearby Provincial Park. I am very fortunate to be able to do 40+ km rides without actually having to cross or ride on a highway.

    Brake Pads

I didn’t do that John, just removed the wheel. Then I pulled the cotter pin, slid the old pads out with their spring and pushed the pistons in. Slid the new pads with spring in, inserted and bent the supplied new cotter pin. Reinstalled the wheel. Brakes worked fine from there. But your way...

    Changing Vado 4 brake pads.

Sorry, I just noticed this. I believe those are just clips that go over the bolts attaching the brakes to the frame. They are designed to keep the bolts from loosening out, not for any brake adjustment purpose.

    Brake Pads

I just replaced my OEM rear Shimano brake pads at almost 8000 km. They started making noise yesterday, and they were worn right down when I replaced them today. Still worked fine though. There appears to be lots of life left in the front pads. Easier job than I expected!
