Any pattern to when it happens? If it's when you hit a bump or pothole then it could be one end of the powertube battery mount has come out of adjustment so it loses connection. That has been a problem other Trek (mostly Allant) owners have posted about.

The motor itself is mechanically the same more or less. All they really did was put new connectors and firmware on the gen4 motors so they could move to the smart system. Are you getting the Nyon display? If so you'll be able to program custom ride modes. It's a very functional system.

Unfortunately, the FL state legislature chose to not include any age restrictions when they adopted the 3 class e-bike structure. I think pretty much every other state using the 3 class definition has age restrictions on class 3 at least.
