    Changing RadMini gear ratios

Sorry, but I already loaned my split tool to another guy in our RV club. He is somewhere halfway across the country, and I probably won't see him again for 6 months. Like stated above, not hard to cut one in half yourself, or take it to a machine shop and give the machinist a 6-pack of his...

    RADMINI-Stock speed upgrade?

Changing max KMPH to 40 is the best you can do with the stock controller/console. You can always pedal faster to go faster, but after a certain point the motor is no longer helping you - it's just along for the ride. I played around with different tire (wheel) size settings in the console on...

    Changing RadMini gear ratios

Surprising that the split tool would not fit. My removal tool was a snug fit in the DNP freewheel before I cut it in half, and a easy drop-in fit after the surgery. It also fit fine in the Shimano (after the cut). But, as long as you got the swap done, it's all good! Enjoy your (improved) ride.

    new rad city issues

As a temporary cure for the fork issues, you should be able to lock the travel, converting it into a (rather heavy) fixed fork. I know I can do this on my Rad Mini, and I would assume they provided the same feature on the Rad City.

    Changing RadMini gear ratios

That procedure might work, but since I didn't try it, I don't know for sure. This is what I was calling a "brute force technique" in my reply above. I prefer, when possible, to use the correct tool for a given job so you don't tear things up, but that's just me. Looking back at my photos in...

    Changing RadMini gear ratios

If you don't want to buy the tool and perform the required surgery, then take the wheel off the bike and carry it to your local bike shop (LBS). They may be able to get the freewheel off using some brute force technique. They may also bugger up the inside of the freewheel, but if you are not...

    problems with shipping

Our 2018 RadMini arrived in a torn, badly mangled box. The UPS driver said he recommended refusing delivery and returning it. I was anxious to get the bike, so I took a chance on accepting the delivery. The bike turned out to be OK - only a bent "guard" over the derailleur and some paint...

My Comparison Of The 2017 and 2018 Rad Mini

We've got the 2018 RadMini. Our first one, so no basis for comparison. I am not noticing any problem with the throttle - it seems to engage very smoothly and ramps up from 0 to 100% in a linear manner. In throttle only mode (PAS 0) I can modulate the motor power to a very fine degree to just...

    Changing RadMini gear ratios

Another update. After a couple weeks of riding almost every day, the DNP freewheel continues to function perfectly. Shifting is still smooth in all gears. I am finding the ratio selection works great for my riding style, which is "recreational/light exercise". I.E I don't commute on the bike...

    Changing RadMini gear ratios

OK, Thanks! Simple solution: don't back pedal. I can do that. My other eBike has a Nexus 3-speed internal gear hub, which of course doesn't care if I back pedal. Guess I have gotten into bad habits. I don't ever back pedal when shifting...just when I'm coasting down the street where I don't...

    Changing RadMini gear ratios

OK, good news (for me, anyway) - I got all my gears back! My shifting problem was totally due to my messing with the derailleur without knowing what I was doing. I went back to the beginning, and followed the excellent Park Tool tutorial linked by Nova Haibike above (Thank You!) This got...

    Changing RadMini gear ratios

I didn't measure the thickness of the rear shoulder on the DNP freewheel. I should have done that while I had it off. I think it was approximately the same thickness as the spacer ring, which means the DNP freewheel (without the spacer) should end up with the sprockets in about the same...

    Changing RadMini gear ratios

I've been experimenting with the mounting of my DNP freewheel. When riding my bike, I was noticing noise from the gears when in high gear (7th speed). I tried adjusting the derailleur, but was not able to entirely eliminate the noise. Close examination showed me that the upper chain line in...

    Changing RadMini gear ratios

The RadMini axel might actually be 12mm. I was using a cheap set of calipers to measure. The male power plug is marked 8FUN, so the whole motor and power cord assembly might come this way from the BAFANG factory. Perhaps we can't blame Rad Power Bikes for this design snafu.

    Changing RadMini gear ratios

Here's a few photos of the RadMini power cord and plugs. The male plug is attached to the motor. The RadMini axle is 11mm, so that's the size of the hole in the axel nut. The power plug has a O.D. of about 16mm, so obviously the nut isn't going over the plug. The torque washer (the one with...

    Changing RadMini gear ratios

Even if you had a suitable drill press and a sufficiently large bit, drilling still would not solve the problem. The splined end of the DNP tool cannot be any larger in OD, since it has to fit into the freewheel socket. The walls of the splined part are as thin as they could possibly be and...

    Changing RadMini gear ratios

Took the bike out for a ride with the new freewheel, and was REALLY pleased! I had to make a couple tiny little adjustments in the derailleur positioning for 6th and 7th gears. After that, shifts were smooth and quiet through all gears. The top half of the gear range is now MUCH more useful...

    Changing RadMini gear ratios

Once the original freewheel is broke loose, it unscrews easily by hand. Install the new freewheel (put a little grease on the threads), being VERY CAREFUL not to get it cross threaded. Tighten it up by hand. You can stop there, if you want. As you pedal the bike the freewheel will continue...

    Changing RadMini gear ratios

Because the axle nut will not go over the motor connector. Very clever work on the part of whoever thought up this motor cord design. NOT!

    Changing RadMini gear ratios

Place the wheel in a comfortable working position Remove the axel nut and washers on the freewheel side. Place your split DNP tool into the recess on the freewheel, and turn it (counter clockwise) with a wrench. I found a 15/16" box end wrench worked perfect on the DNP tool. My freewheel...
