Are newer hub motors as capable as mid drives?

Definately agree....its also the most fun to ride, not sure why that is..perhaps lowest cg. If it had torque sensing thats all I would own. I have high hopes for the CYC proton I did do a 6 month stint on just the BBSHD (on both DIY ebikes). When I went back to the GMAC with torque sensing...

Are newer hub motors as capable as mid drives?

Here is one using a RH212(DD) with statorade compared to a GMAC 10T(geared hub) https://ebikes.ca/tools/simulator.html?motor=GMAC10T&batt=B5216_GA&wheel=29i&mass=140&axis=mph&motor_b=9C212_7.5T_SA&batt_b=B5216_GA&wheel_b=29i&mass_b=140&bopen=true&grade=9&grade_b=9 The DD starts to overheat over...

Are newer hub motors as capable as mid drives?

I love the silence of my RH212 as well. It definately is a dog below 15mph and starting from a stop. Hills take quite a bit more power (i.e. 0% to 6% I go from a constant 300W to 600W. I can also use my legs). All that matters is that you like it 👍 The hub vs mid-drive debate will never end...

Are newer hub motors as capable as mid drives?

Isnt the grin motor simulator fun. You can also play with I think their trip analyzer and use actual terrain data. Lots of variables to play with (lots of videos on how to use). Justin also gave some good insights to his BBS02/BBSHD testing and incorporation into the tool on...

Are newer hub motors as capable as mid drives?

I would agree with that both from experience and using the grin motor simulator. Sure the geared hub drive can go up steep hills, just not for long. I did an exhausting analysis on the grin simulator a few years back and the GMAC10t would start overheating at anything over 6% (at full power)...

This comparison at grin seems to contradict your claim...

Proper seats/saddles (especially for an e-bike)

On the subject of butt soreness, I only recently started encountering it in the last few years. All my riding is on flat handlebars. What has changed? I have slowly been raising handlebar height due hand numbness. There can be all sorts of reasons for this (age, weight, core strength). At...

Proper seats/saddles (especially for an e-bike)

I wanted to tackle the issue of having a seatpost too low. I have two identical setups (Surly Ogres) with every part identical except for the motor type (GMAC vs BBSHD) and suspension seatpost type (Redshift(GMAC) Vs Kinekt(BBSHD)). Lets call GMAC bike1 and BBSHD bike2. I ride pretty much...

A BBSHD Killer? Here comes the CYC Photon

Perhaps a free year subscription of strava so it can be PROVEN and compared against others for EBR credibility.

Just found a cracked rim on my allant 8

I wouldnt narrow down my selection based on a rim having eyelets. I have had failures similar to what was shown on rims with/without eyelets. The rims that failed were all OEM rims and the failures happened pretty soon (with 2-3k miles). Unless you are spending $$, manufacturers try to cut...

Choosing FS e-bike for large rider for mixed offroad / paved trail use

How did your derive the 150kg number? What is the limit for 28spoke wheels. I would love to use a website that showed me this data. Strava?

Choosing FS e-bike for large rider for mixed offroad / paved trail use

I think stefan was somehow trying to give credibility to the concept of 'underbiking'. https://www.merlincycles.com/blog/underbiking-whats-the-point/#:~:text=In a nutshell, underbiking is,on a cross country bike. Basically it something roadies (who dont like MTBs) do. Its silly IMHO. Why...

A BBSHD Killer? Here comes the CYC Photon

Its really more of a demo of worst case conditions for his ride (throttle only) vs temps. Thats what I got out of it

Specialized Turbo Vado SL: An Incredible E-Bike (User Club)

Good summary here: I use them both and completely agree on his analysis, although he doesnt have a strava account or use his strava account to get credibility. Kinekt is better for the bigger hits, Redshift is better for milder gravel rides. I have them on bikes which match these criteria...

Specialized teases details of Globe Bikes sub-brand Cargo eBike

I happen to live in a very fitness/cycling oriented area (near boulder, CO). Ebike usage out here has exploded in the last few years. I would say over 80% of the bikes I see are throttle bikes and probably 50% percent of those I see are using throttle only...until they see you and then...

    Wind speeds and your ride.

The last leg of my rides usually end up with a 6 mile section (roughly) of rolling 4-6% hills (long 6% grade at the end) bucking a headwind. I have handlebars that allow me to get into an aero tuck (origin 8 strongbow) and on windy days, I am passing bikes like that. With the wind at 30mph...

    Wind speeds and your ride.

When I lived in Dallas, Tx (86-88) we made skateboard longboards(with our windsurfing sails) and rode in parking lots at night when the wind would pick up. Apparent wind was awesome until a gust stopped and the sail would backwind (while your doing 20+mph). Surpised I never hurt myself. High...

    Wind speeds and your ride.

Ugghh, 40mph winds today with gusts to 60 just outside of Boulder, CO. My house does this twisting motion with the higher wind gusts High winds encountered during the winter are the main reason I use higher power ebikes I do miss the winds in the SF bay area. I actually moved there in 88 to...

A BBSHD Killer? Here comes the CYC Photon

No arguments on the benefits of the BBSHD, so easy to make a clean 36mph capable bike....I love mine. If I could have only 1 DIY bike, it would be equipped with a BBSHD. Yeah, in the scheme of things, I definately spend more on my Grin Stuff but usually dont do it all at once and the high...
