Off the top of my head I would say that the MXUS motor on the Limited is a little bit noisier. Neither are real quiet, nor are they annoyingly loud. Usually the wind noise is louder than the motor. On the other hand, the Brose motor (with its belt driven mid drive motor) is almost silent.

Thanks for the info AHicks. Would you say they both make the bike ride similarly smooth? I am less concerned about the longevity. If I get a few thousand miles out of it, that should cover me for half a dozen years. BTW, I'm 6' 170 lbs, so I would put less stress on it.

I now have two ebikes for city use. I put a Long Travel Thudbuster on the first bike and expect to get another suspension seatpost for the newer bike. The Thudbuster is pretty nice, but does not compare to the 160mm (6") of travel my mountain bike has. But it does a good job on city streets...

Check out the Ride1Up Limited. 1000 watts torque sensor and throttle. I have a R1U 700series and its a solid bike with good components for the money.

Consider the Luna Cycles X1 Enduro. Carbon frame, RS Yari fork, 6 inches of travel, good brakes, shifters and tires as well as a dropper post all for $3500 - it would leave room in your budget for a street bike as well.

Take both types on singletrack trails and you will see the purpose of a torque sensor. Singletrack trail does not mean rails to trails, greenways and the like.

I think you would do better to look for two separate bikes. $1500 for a commuter and $5000 for a mtb, especially if you are on double black diamond trails. Ride1Up, Espin and others for commuter, a marked down mtb from CrazyLennys could work.
