You would think that, but you can actually buy housing that is pre-lubricated, and Shimano also sells special cable grease. It definitely helps with the basic galvanized cables that come stock on most bikes; these tend to rust over time. When you replace your cables, I recommend replacing them...

It has puzzled me as well. Fat regular bikes were a fad that came and went, but I guess the motor changed the dymanics of the equation; the motor makes up for the inefficiency. I think it is mostly a North American phenomenon, where bikes are still primarily a toy.

The short answer is no, at least not that I have ever seen. If there is data out there, any improvement would likely be very dependent on the quality and adjustability of the fork, and also the tuning of the fork by the user. Really cheap forks are worse than rigid ones. Same for poorly...

Primarily only the top-end stuff comes out of Japan. The rest is manufactured in China, Malaysia, and Singapore.

There is nothing wrong with the more expensive Bikes Direct bikes. But their entry level bikes are pretty rubbish and are only worth the price paid; their "list price" stretches the truth beyond belief.

Aside from the highest end bikes, all companies have to make choices in specification. They are not trying to cut corners per se, but trying to hit a price point at which they think is right for the market. Of course that does not excuse a poorly weather sealed button pad.

I always recommend having a spare hanger in your on-bike repair kit; that way you can replace it in the field and not be stranded.

It is just another Chinese bike like dozens of others. You could remove their name and put another on it and no one would be able tell the difference.

Can't say I have had the "pleasure" to work on no-name hydros, but I have had to work on cheap mechanical disc brakes. They are just barely better than cheap rim brake calipers...and I am not even sure about that. Getting them to not rub and still stop often requires lots of swearing. 😛

Does the bike have a suspension fork? If it does, it could be that there is play in the suspension itself, which is not uncommon on cheap forks. There are bushings inside which have to be tight enough so there is no play, but also loose enough so that the suspension can move. Normally you cannot...
