    Remote Living and Riding

Hopefully the border with Canada will open soon. My second home there is heavenly...but windy and hilly...and remote. Northern Newfoundland. Last fall I got a used-one-season-rental, 620 mi., highish end emtn bike, Rossignol branded https://www.rossignol.com/us/rmi5024-000.html to ride on the...

    Motor Noise?

I finally googled. Turns out there's a comparison of the noise levels of 7 of the more powerful ebike/emtn bike motors: Turns out my Shimano e8000 is just about the noisiest. As noted above, I'm mostly an ebike virgin--tried a few for a few minutes each at dealers--and got my wonderful bike...

    Motor Noise?

Feel like I'm asking one of the world's dumbest questions. But better to ask than not. Are ebike motors, Shimano in particular, silent or nearly so? I bought a used eMtn bike in the fall. Only used it a few times before the ice and snow took over here in the mtns. Now had it out in the...

The new Schwalbe Super Moto tire - 2021 model

Just put Schwalbe Super Moto Xs reflex on my new used e-mtn bike, in place of knobbies. So much nicer to ride and fine on the gravel and dirt where I ride. On road its literally night and day the difference is that dramatic, in the more pleasant direction. On the old woods roads and dirt and...

Help. Can't get shimano downtube 500w battery out

Got a really nice used e-mtn bike made by Rossignol, I think a one-time thing as they now own Felt Bikes. I had an awful time getting the battery out and had to take the upper and lower rubber shields off. Then I got it in and out. But now I can't get it out again. Not moving at all. I turn the...

Any reliable ebike carriers for car/suv (tow hitch)?

I too am in the process of finding a good hitch-mount ebike carrier. The easiest and least expensive solution for one bike is a motorbike/cycle carrier. Amazon has several and Harbor Freight has one on sale right now for $109, the Haul-Master 400lb Receiver-mount carrier.

    Ebike vs analog

Just got my first ebike two weeks ago. I'm a long time bike rider, riding 3-6 times a week for more than forty years...in season, meaning 'til there's ice or snow on the road. Rode mostly road bikes for thirty years then got a mtn bike for commuting and western travel. Been riding a great 29er...

The ultimate pedal and shoes discussion

I'm having a terrible time finding any real flat pedals for my new e-mtn bike. The bike came with some nice what I'd call cagey flats, Bontrager Line Elites. But I need even pressure on the bottom of my feet, so.... When I say real flat pedals I mean what folks here refer to as sandpaper pedals...

What are your cold weather ebike limits?

Or heated handlebars, as are available on most snowmobiles and many motorcycles? Up here in the mountains, it made it down to single digits Fahrenheit last night and its still below freezing. We've had snow showers and freezing rain for three days, so I've been missing my exercise, in part...

Learning about Shimano Steps Motors and their Capabilites and Adjustments

I bought an ebike and was completely dissatisfied with the included owners manual. It told me nothing about the motor and its capabilities and possibilities for adjustment. So I did a search for the Shimano Steps Owners/Users Manual, which was easy to find on the Shimano website. But the Users...

Question about experience of using Shimano Steps E6100 motor

Just got my first ebike, a mtn bike with Shimano 8000, which I mostly use on the road, paved and gravel, and exploring. I live in the heart of the mountains and I'm a several times a week non-e hill biker. Going up hills, long slopes and rarely steep slopes, even with zero offroading, eats the...

    Wrong Bike is Right Bike

I'm guessing 50% paved roads, 40% gravel and cinder roads and bike paths, 10% off road. I ride my non-e bike hardtail 29er 4-6 days a week in all the hilly and windy conditions I describe from May thru mid-Nov. in that ratio. Its got Big Bens, which I love and which do great and are similar in...

    Wrong Bike is Right Bike

I've always had handlebar packs for assorted gear, and always had a backpack too. Too bad that handlebar packs really don't work on this bike. I have great battery lights, just got to rig em up. I'm usually careful and don't use the lights, so they sit in the draw by the year though I ride every...

    Wrong Bike is Right Bike

Can you picture a 72-year old dude still with muscle--and a fine ale and Ben and Jerry's belly--riding this? Yesterday I did the beautiful unpaved 16-mile hilly woods road loop near me. I've tried from either end: It's still hard work on heading uphill without relief for 45 minutes or longer...

Can I substitute Sram for Shimano derailleur?

I seem to have a bent derailleur, a lovely Shimano Deore on my e8000-powered mtn bike. My local bike shop guy says he's got a high end Sram on hand that will work fine. I'm concerned that I may lose some functionality if I don't use a Shimano derailleur with the Shimano motor. Anyone know about...

    Wrong Bike is Right Bike

That's it. Yup, $3700 bike, way overkill as a machine for me, very capable machine with the super brakes and everything. I like the minimal display. It all makes me feel safe. Its used and it has an issue, that I already had my local bike guy look at. I'm gonna get Schwalbe Super Moto Xs put on...

    Wrong Bike is Right Bike

Two thousand bucks means something to me. Its also a great distraction from an election I care very much about. So, I'm an older guy, a regular bike commuter back in the day on a dual bike/ped way alongside the T; now I retired to the mountains and actually enjoy grinding up hills--the only way...

    Is 400wh enough?

Thanks so much for your imput. Living in the mountains, wanting to bike the mountains, and living up a long and in some places steep hill at rides end, I've decided to go for more wh.

    Is 400wh enough?

Yup. And $2.5K was already bumping my budget and it appears the only Explore offering is $3k, and though the 2021 has fenderslightsrack, none of which I need, its actually downspeced in things I'm interested in, going from Deore to Alivio for derailler for instance.
