This is enlightening to me.
Here, Tekton explains that Phillips and JIS drivers are the same. The dot on some JIS screws means that before 1965, the thread pitch differed from ISO.

That explains why I've gotten along without JIS screwdrivers. Here, a Serbian bike mechanic explains why I often need Pozidriv.

It's a British variation, patented in 1962, for more torque. I have several sets of bits with PH and PZ. It seems to me that PZ is usually the one that works.
So when my usual screwdrivers wouldn't tighten my shifter, it wasn't a difference in standards but slight variations between screwdrivers. AAAAAGH! Cruciform screws should be illegal!
