Proprietary Bikes and the Right to Repair

This is enlightening to me.

Here, Tekton explains that Phillips and JIS drivers are the same. The dot on some JIS screws means that before 1965, the thread pitch differed from ISO.

That explains why I've gotten along without JIS screwdrivers. Here, a Serbian bike mechanic explains why I often need Pozidriv.

It's a British variation, patented in 1962, for more torque. I have several sets of bits with PH and PZ. It seems to me that PZ is usually the one that works.

So when my usual screwdrivers wouldn't tighten my shifter, it wasn't a difference in standards but slight variations between screwdrivers. AAAAAGH! Cruciform screws should be illegal!

Or, just buy a bike that doesn't use proprietary components.

My e-bikes have brand name components and my batteries don't have a communication wire, so I could figure out the electrics.

Sure, it restricts your choice of bikes,

Just sucks to see all these ebikes becoming landfill.

but if you're a cobbler like me, it's worth it.

I do a fair bit of cobbling myself.

My e-bike was nearly hobbled by wobbles, but I managed to cobble together a fix.

Using the plastic beads that you told me about,..

Or always just buy the same brand. Call me a brandWhore but I have about 10 bicycles and all are Giants, they just make great bikes and have never dropped the ball, unlike Scott and a few others. My latest, a Stance, is an entry level MTB I bought solely for the suspension and dropper. As a bonus I get the thruAxles, tubeless rims and a one x drivetrain, perfect for a middrive conversion to ride the rough blacktop out where I am as well as a little gravel too no doubt. Not expensive, super reliable. Now I just have to wait till the new laws settle down cause it won't be strictly road legal when I am ;)

I wouldn't touch the Giant made e-bikes though, no one seems to be making a reliable middrive.
For the Giant Talon E+, common issues include motor cut-offs or errors caused by water ingress, speed sensor misalignment, and battery terminal corrosion.

I think it was in 2016 that my BIL told me that his big diesel JD would shut off when he attempted some necessary action, maybe raising the scoop. He was supposed to hire a company with a big truck and trailer to haul it to the dealer. He asked me to troubleshoot. I asked if he had a schematic. He said he had the shop manual on CD. He was away when I went over there. Based on what did and didn't work, the schematic pointed to a certain relay, but I didn't know how to open the panels to look for the board with the relay. He showed me when he returned. The coil was getting voltage but the contacts weren't closing. I assured him that the relay was the problem. The dealer had it in stock, and it was pretty cheap.

He's hated me ever since, for knowing what he didn't know about a tractor he'd bought.

I have full sized Vessel brand JIS screwdrivers. I don't think I have any Pozidriv and I can't recall needing one.
The only place I ever seen
'posidrive screws were on a "Mack"truck and pre 21st century Ford products, take a gander at a 50's model Chevy truck"clutch heads" everywhere -yech!

I'm often ecstatic when proven wrong because it means I'm smarter than I was. I don't feel so smart if I make the same mistake a couple of years later and remember too late what I'd learned.
