Hello from a robotics enthusiast / Exploring the "smart" side of E-Bikes

Hi everyone,

I’ve been lurking around the forums for a bit and decided it was finally time to introduce myself.

My background is actually rooted in robotics and computer science engineering, but I’ve recently become fascinated by the intersection of DIY electronics and e-bike customization. There is so much overlap between building a robot and optimizing an e-bike, especially when you start looking at motor controllers, sensor integration, and battery management systems.

I’m currently spending a lot of time in my "garage" (which is mostly just a desk covered in microcontrollers and soldering iron tips), looking at how to use standard robotics sensors like ultrasonic or hall-effect sensors to add a bit more "intelligence" to standard builds. Specifically, I'm interested in better proximity sensing and custom telemetry displays.

I’m looking forward to learning from the veterans here, seeing some of the incredible custom builds in this section, and hopefully contributing some of my technical knowledge where it might be helpful for someone's DIY wiring or sensor setup.

Welcome to EBR. As Gionnirocket said, the serious DIY crowd hangs out at Endless Sphere. It's really quite a unique place. Hall-effect sensors are found all over ebikes, there's a set in the motor for determining rpm and direction of the motor, most throttles use a hall-effect sensor, PAS uses them too, but torque sensors usually use some kind of strain gauge. The Grin website at https://ebikes.ca is also a good resource for DIY technical information.
