Since I posted the original link to the BRAIN article in March 2024, the functions of the CPSC have been partially transformed from the intent of Congress for it to be an independent product safety focused oversight body. It has been reported the current administration first fired three Democrat members (the legality of which was glossed over in a politicized decision by Republican appointed judges on the Supreme Court), then the administration tried to defund CPSC, harass the federal civil servant staff, and merge the oversight function under the Department of Homeland Security (which failed during congressional budget wrangling because that would remove independence), and a Republican member was nominated over the summer (his nomination remains stuck in the Senate). Despite the constant harassment from an Administration determined to redirect it, the CPSC continues to function as a (nominally) independent oversight body.
