The other one was likely hitting the chain. This kind folds up to the left and I find to be plenty stable. Adjust the feet so about half the bikes weight is resting on them.

Yes, maybe something like 'L' stock for rigidity. Or maybe hollow square stock and held together with M8 hex cap screws. Last time I used 'L' stock was to move the headlight on a Como from under the basket to the front.
Angle stock would mean that there is a vertical frame member to mount this to. I would not use anything hollow with the force that the mount has to deal with.

Maybe even a block of wood.....to lower it since the Fetch2 has 20 inch wheels. With the wood block I can carve out clearance for wires.
