Specialized Turbo Vado SL: An Incredible E-Bike (User Club)

Specialized Turbo Vado SL User Club (est. 2021) recommends Redshift ShockStop Stem 😊 Also ShockStop Computer Mount and Utility Mount.

No motor March has now moved into no motor April :)

I am quite enjoying the lack of noise as I cycle around. I am in training for a sporting holiday that will involve a few competitive ride outs and I want to be in tip top shape for that.

The hardest thing will be adjusting to a hire shop road bike, can never get used to drop bar gear changes and often find myself changing up when I should be changing down - I much prefer the straight bar setup particularly as I upgraded to the click button ease of the Eagle AXS.

Bike is still as good as new 10 months in and I haven't dropped it yet. I treated the chain to a couple of rounds of Park Chain Cyclone cleans last week and even the chain is sparkling as new now.

It looks my SL Range Extender marked by me as "unnamed" has been shot. Symptoms:
  • The TCU displays the "Range Extender Error" pattern
  • The battery displays one red bar and two flashing green bars.
I think this specific RE was slightly problematic from the start. The good thing the battery is not warm at any point. Well, written off!

This is speculation. The problem, if it recurs may be the cable, not the battery.
What cable do you mean? The RE was charged off the e-bike. The error LEDs were lit on a disconnected battery.

The problematic RE was occasionally manifesting a similar error before. No issues whatsoever with any other of the 3 REs I own.

Now, the "unnamed" RE is charging. I keep my eye on it.

Perhaps the BMS had detected some unusual behaviour of the battery such as heavily unbalanced cells?

Oops. I forgot the problem occurred during charging.

I agree with your suggestion that the issue is with t(e electronics in the battery. Since you have plenty of spares, you probably won’t get suck with a dead battery on one of your rides.

Did you bring it into your dealer? They may be able to run a diagnosis Since they’re a Specialized store. Don’t have those near me. In fact the local sh9ps where I bought my SL and have it serviced no longer are Specialized dealers. There aren't any nearby that deal with e-bikes. Trek is dominant with strong growth by Canondale and the emergence of RAD.

Indeed it is a good idea to see a Specialized dealer! Meanwhile, I will keep an eye on the battery, discharging it down to 20% on the tomorrow's long ride (I will take two extra Range Extenders just in case).

I ride with a group of seniors (60-85yo) a couple times a week. There are about 20 people on the mailing list but fewer that show up on a particular day. There are now four of us in the group who ride e-bikes and they are all Vado SLs! There must be something about this model, which has few counterparts among the mainstream brands.

Just an interesting experience that I thought I'd throw in.

That's great.

I am a bit younger when compared to your mentioned age range. That said, my friends back in in college 35 years ago teased me by saying that I acted like I was already in my 50's... So it all makes sense now lol.

I join a similar weekly group now and then. Two SLs (including mine), a Gazelle commuter, and the rest unassisted road bikes — a few insanely light and aero CF racers, some beautifully maintained vintage steel, one tandem.

Most riders strike me as lifelong roadies but still welcome ebikes. About 40% female. I'm probably older than most at 76. Usually manage to keep up in OFF or ECO, but the strongest riders can leave me on hills that put me in SPORT — a few at least my age! Very humbling.
