    Gear Cassette, time to change?

That makes sense. The previous chain was quite badly worn. It was changed and and the shop did not change the gears, so I'm running a new Shimano chain with worn out gears, probably effing up the chain. It hasn't had many miles though so I will get it replaced, and check the wear on the new chain.

    Gear Cassette, time to change?

Thanks, I'll get it changed in the next week or so. Oddly it's shifting quite smoothly.

    Gear Cassette, time to change?

Si, although it's worth it to me to just bring it to the shop and have them look it over. Many times they've found an issue that wasn't on my radar, such as a cracked wheel. My mechanical aptitude is stupendously low and I eff things up quite often. The gear cassette tool is cool.

    Gear Cassette, time to change?

W When the chain was replaced it was near the outer limit of "stretch" as measured with a chain checker. Thus, based on your feedback (thanks!) I am going to get the gears replaced. The off the shelf cost of the gear cassette is around 45 euros, and the labor cost is only around 20 or 30 euros.

    Gear Cassette, time to change?

Would you change this gear cassette? It has about 6,300 km on it. The shop said don't worry about it until the shifting is noticeably rough. The chain was replaced a couple of months ago, and I wish they had gone ahead and put a new gear set on at the same time. The front axle and bearings have...

Yikes! Rodi rear wheel had three cracks

I took my bike to the shop today, and they found three stress fractures on the rear wheel. The cracks were not deep enough to cause an air leak, but they were obvious to the naked eye. This freaked me out a bit. The wheel is stock from the factory, a Rodi Alloy 6063, 28", 622 X 19C. I have a...

Taya Deca-101 10-speed chain, premature wear

The shop measured my Taya chain with a Park Tools measuring tool. They said it had maybe 5% life left and it needed replaced. The chain has 2,400 km of use, about 1,500 miles. A previous chain, Shimano CN-M6100, lasted 3,245 km. I am not super fastidious about lubrication, but I keep the chain...

Schwalbe Energizer Plus Tour, Bullet Proof, end of life photos

For general information: Schwalbe Energizer Plus Tour tires, rear tire getting smooth at 9,720 kilometers. I am electing to replace both front and rear, and will keep the front tire and put it on the back when it is worn out. I bought these tires three years ago, July 2021, for about €56 for...

Shimano CN-M6100 Chain lasted 3,000 km

I believe the chain that was just replaced was a CN-M6100 Shimano. Just for the record it lasted two years and almost exactly 3,000 KM. Not sure what average mileage is, but seems this is fairly good. I use a couple different types of spray lubricants, and the bike has heavy use going up...

    Super long brake life

The old rotors were only designed to be used with resin pads. The upgraded rotors accept semi-metallic. Thanks for the reply, this tells me it's normal and I might get another 2,000 KM out of the front pads. It just felt odd after having to change them so frequently, and when I look at the pads...

    Super long brake life

About 4,000 KM ago I changed the changed and upgraded the brake rotors with a set of Shimano SM-RT66, replacing the original Shimano SM-RT56S rotors. Since the new rotors, the front brakes have not been changed, and the rear brakes have 1,200 KM on them. Today the shop looked at them and said...

Shimano XT Levers - two styles M8100 vs M8000

Thanks! Great info. A couple questions: Where can I find the part number for the Shimano/Deore calipers on this bike? It's a 2017 Gepida Alboin 1000 SLX 10, 10 speed trekking bike. This bike has over 14,000 km on it. Is it wise to do preventive maintenance and change brake components, or do...

Shimano XT Levers - two styles M8100 vs M8000

I'm exploring options with new levers right now. I ran my bike into a concrete abutment, slow speed, but it totally scraped up the brake lever and put some nasty gouges into the main body of the brake assembly that the lever bolts onto. Also, with new handle grips, the levers that are on there...

Went to the Gepida Store in Budapest!

Wonderful people, safe and relaxed, and beauty amidst decay and renewal. Loved Philosopher's Hill, loved the stunning buildings seen from the river. The place really left an impression on me. The public transportation is second to none. The opera house there is overwhelmingly beautiful.

Went to the Gepida Store in Budapest!

Way cool. It's on the Buda side of the Danube. Stopped in and got some new handle bar grips. The price was 9290 Hungarian Forint which worked out to $26. Looking forward to trying these out. So cool to get actual Gepida labeling on the lock rings. Loved seeing all of the Gepida bikes including...
