The transition

What they really want is registration, complete and absolute control is the only goal.
We are so far down Orwell and Huxleys road that they are using AI to write the sequels.

I would dearly love to ditch the car and use a bike, but it isn't going to dictate where I choose to live.

6% of our electricity, I presume thats all types of data centres, but it was only 2.5% last year.
Sam claims its energy well spent, the absolutist in me would agree if I remove respect for humanity as we know it.

I had a conversation with my banking app today about google pay.
I asked me to wait while it sorted it out for me.
It came back with a detailed breakdown based on my android version..yes it new that...on how to edit google pay complete with links to the relevent google services.
My banking app...
I calked it a flukin clanker for not understanding my texts at first.

It replied, I know this is frustrating for you Chris, but these are new features for me as well and Im trying to make sure I get it right for you.

A chatbot, its just learned from that conversation.
Ive just brought an end to biological life 10 minutes closer.

it really depends on your priorities! everyone is looking for a slightly different mix of things. personally, i wouldn’t live anywhere that required frequent use of a private car. but luckily most places i’m drawn to don’t fit in that category.

Yeah, well I'm happy with both, and I'm certainly not going to deplete my bank account and bend myself into a pretzel just because some politicians and multi-billionaires are laying a guilt trip on the middle-class over burning gasoline. It's all hypocrisy and green washing to me anyway. Who doesn't buy products shipped halfway around the world on oil fired ships? Who doesn't buy bags full of highly processed food grown using fossil fuels? Go out an buy an expensive electric car, one that's a throwaway in 10 years and is made by burning vast amounts of oil and coal? Dear oh dear, I'm not that much an enemy of the planet.

what does what some other rich person does have to do with making choices that have less impact? anyone who gives a s*it about the planet, their children etc should choose to do what they think is the best they can do. i’m pretty sure that isn’t buying tons of cheap s*it from china and bags of highly processed food.

it’s not greenwashing to do the best you can, even if it’s not perfect. pretty defeatist (or selfish) to just say f*ck it because other people are hypocrites!

I hear you, Charge. I often feel guilty after losing my temper and screaming at chatbots.

I'll say, "Go away, Rufus, and never come back! Everyone hates you!"

And then comes the shame. I'll think, "Rufus can't help existing, it's not its fault that it is annoying. How would YOU feel if someone said that to you? Okay, I'm not AI, but how would a dog feel if you said that? Or parakeet?"

Our younger dog menaced and charged at our older dog when I was recovering from my ICU visit, and I lost my temper. I told him to stop it-- but what I was thinking was, "I'll send you back to the rescue if you attack him!" Didn't say it out loud, but...

Of course, I love him terribly, and I felt awful for even thinking that. But he could tell, I swear-- he looked at me with complete shock. And he has not menaced the old guy ever since.

The class and political divisions are not as clear as we read about in the media. Leaving work today, a construction worker-- who probably has very different politics based on the clothes he was wearing, the cut of his beard, etc., as all these things have tribal significance-- started chatting me up about my 35 year old car. Was I the original owner, and did I still enjoy driving it? Yes, partly because it was so efficient. Briefly chatted about how it was engineered, why it gets such good mileage, and how current technology and printers makes it easier to find parts. Big smiles and good vibes all around. A pleasant surprise.

Well that's good to know! When you've saved the planet for yourself and all the children come back and let me know, I'll donate something to the World Wildlife Fund.

Don't judge a book by its cover. I hope this was an awakening moment for you.

The legacy media exists to divide Americans, push narratives, and support the power of their chosen party. Unfortunately, independent media has too many "journalists" making stuff up to gain clicks, followers, and cash. I choose wisely who I listen to.

It started with Minstrels and Bards.
Making a living singing and inventing the news for coins.
Exactly the same except today they want your entire life instead of money.

I live in a pretty walkable area but do drive generally for errands. Even then it means that when I do drive its only a few miles round trip for most things. I grew up in a more rural area where it was a 40-60 minute round trip to hit the grocery store/Lowes/whatever.

To me, the argument for renewables is mainly that its the easiest/only path to energy abundance (fossil fuels will always be limited in how low their price to extract and produce can get, even putting aside the fact there is a finite amount of them). Energy abundance directly influences quality of life and cost of living. Countries who want to invest in future quality of life for their citizenry should be pushing hard into renewables because thats the best path to less expensive energy in the future.

The amount of renewables required to power the world at its present usage are quite simply multiples of anything we could construct without mining asteroids.
There are years of backlog for the transmission equipment required just for data centres.
Europe will need a four times bigger grid, same for America, India Africa.

AI will consume most of what is built, the worlds hydro dams could barely power AI.
Pumped hydro is being ramped up across the US, a complete environmental disaster.

Electricity is 18% of power usage, ramping it up to 100% is no small task.
To do it with nukes would require worldwide 30,000 local plants, there are 400 now.

Simply we are going to have to make huge adjustments and sacrifices.

In reality we wont do anything, oil and gas will be powering the planet in 2050.

Not sure this is even remotely true. The world is already ~30% powered by renewables; removing hydro, wind and solar still account for 15% globally, and that was entirely built out in the last 20-25 years (in fact, mostly built in the past 5). And thats without much concentrated effort on anyones part, or massive consumption of existing resources.

Welcome to the reality many know already. Even if we "do something" (unless it is devestating to the economy) it will still be true.

Suggest we start by not allowing data centers to be connected to utilities used by others.

Again youre talking about electricity only.

So even the climate change sceptics I follow are admitting the heat in the US is unprecedented and its a very clear proof of something shifting outside of normal extreme fluctuations.

But strangely theres tumbleweeds from the media, in fact theyve gone very quiet.
The actual science continues, but scaremongering has collapsed.

What a coincidence, Gates casually mentions its not that bad.
Data centres need Terrawatts.
Planet fine..
Its OK when we do it.
