mechanical doping

Not sure who actually pioneered erythropoetin doping back in Armstrong's day. But per the video above, we know at least some of the pioneers of modern motor doping.

Once nearly everybody's doping, as they eventually were in Armstrong's day, it's hard to know what to think. But easy for the pioneers: They deserve the nastiest part of cycling hell.

Just posting about the Scottish olympic cyclist Sir Chris Hoy.
And his wife was diagnosed with MS a week later, though the timing of this is reported rather inconsistently.
Life rules over all preparation

LeMond who knows a thing or two about doping as the first whistleblower on Armstrong, pointing out his numbers were impossible, is cautiously happy' about top riders numbers today. Plus they x ray bikes at the finish line to check for concealed motors. I wouldn't say it's 100% that there is no mechanical doping, never say never and there has been some suspicious on road activity of riders swapping bikes in final kilometres (hiding evidence?) but as the risks are now well known it'll be harder to hide it.

I don't know who pioneered EPO use for athletes in general, but Dr. Ferrari was the one who pioneered it for UCI pro cycling. He was working with a number of teams before Armstrong commandeered him for US Postal.

Not everyone was doping, at least to the level of US Postal or Festina, but if you didn't do what Lance told you to do, he would destroy your career. He was a total prick of the highest order. He abused everyone around him. In my mind, that will always be his legacy. He put riders lives on the line so he could win without any regard for their safety or well being.

The UCI does not use X-ray machines or thermal imaging cameras to test bikes. They have a specially equipped iPad that has a magnetometer and an app on the tablet that can scan the bike in less than 30 seconds. Supposedly, all national federations have a few as well, but I've never used one.

The good news when it comes to mechanical doping is its much easier to check for and much less ambiguous than all the various ways of biological doping. You need a motor which means you need metal and magnets and those can be found relatively simply, and if your bike has a motor in it its hard to argue against it.

He's a classic sociopath. He is now somewhat successfully resurrecting his reputation with a popular podcast, with guests like Bradley Wiggins and even Cav. It seems time forgives. I can't.
