Death Valley Century Cancelled By Organizers

The organizers just cancelled the ride due to heavy rain and possible flash flooding. Some friends and I were signed up and looking forward to it. Oh well
Too bad. I know how much you were looking forward to the ride.

From everything I've seen about this storm system, I think they made the right call. In the desert, the runoff rate in heavy rain is probably close to 100%. Add narrow, steep-walled, high-gradient canyons feeding the washes below, and you have a recipe for flash flood disaster. Also a potential for debris flows.

Of course, you're familiar with all that in the Santa Monica and Santa Ynez Mountains near the coast.

Hey Jeremy, I’ve been through Death Valley after a storm like this. All the low lying roads get washed away. In the nearby town of Lone Pine, they are expecting 2” of rain tomorrow. All that has to go somewhere, probably thru Death Valley.

It was the right call to cancel the event.

A wasted opportunity: instead of bikes, they could have switched to white-water kayaks instead, right? o_O

I mean, it is death valley...
I read that this storm is on the big side for November, but we are in our so-called rainy season. Maybe the seasoned Death Valley riders knew to bring backup kayaks.
