The American Automobile Association covers it's members, not their vehicles, so they will pick up you and your vehicle if you need them to. I'm a member and called them, and they said that they would. If you break down on a road, of course.

We're probably a couple of decades from battery standardization, but I can envision them bringing you a fully charged spare.

I have my doubts about wrecker operators picking up a bicycle. A lot of the wheel/bumper lift operators, the deck is so covered with dolly, chains & **** that there is no room for a bike to ride. And calling a cab, they don't show up with a crown vic anymore. A lot of the cabs around here, I don't think my bike would fit in it even with the back open and tied down.

AAA doesn't have to transport your bike, just you. Lock up the bike in a public area if possible, take your valuables and let AAA transport you to your vehicle. You can then pick up your disabled bike. Check your level of AAA coverage though. Not all provide this service.

I called a couple of towing operators to ask about this. They have vehicles that can carry a bike. For the price of AAA, considering I have local family that can help if I need transport and that I live in an urban/suburban area with lots of nearby towing operators, I don’t have a paid roadside assist subscription like AAA, since I think I would use it less than once per year.

When calling, just ask for a flatbed, as I do with my plow Jeep. Towtrucks are becoming obsolete.

I specifically asked AAA about breakdowns with a bike and they said they would take it.

Where I live they treat bikes the same as motorcycles, that is they send out a flatbed truck with a tilting deck.

@Amy , I use AAA for my plowing business, it's cheap, as they will take the Jeep with the plow. Otherwise, it's security for everyone...AAA Plus will tow up to 100 miles.

I'm a member of Better World Club (BWC). They still offer the same towing and such. They also offer 24/7 roadside assistance for bicycles. AND there's this bad thing about AAA:

BWC is NOT part of the Highway Lobby -- the conglomerate of automobile, oil, tire, and cement interests that advocates for more and larger road building and against the development of infrastructure and safety protections for other modes of transportation, including mass transit, bicycling, and walking. AAA is part of the Highway Lobby.

BWC is definitely worth checking out. I've only needed to be towed once with them and they were just as quick to respond as AAA.

I'm a road rider, not a bikepath, trail rider. There's nothing sweeter than a smooth adphalt road.

I agree that a newly paved road is nice. However, I’d rather support a company that pushes for more bike lanes and bike paths. I’m lucky that I have a bike path that takes me 35 miles to work. I wouldn’t be able to make the commute without it. Do as you wish though. I’ve used AAA on the past.
