Hello all im mason ive just bought myself a large giant fathom e3 bike... its great but the hills are a long way away and my car has no tow bar putting one on is out of the question unfortunetly. I have orderd in a boot mounted car rack it ties on strongly.
My question is I am getting mixed reviews from e bike owners if I carry the battery in my car to loose a bit of weight can it be on this kind of rack safely? Ill ad photos thanks for any help in advance I need to attack the single tracks to see what it can do

All I've heard in researching racks is, "you shouldn't" put your ebike on these kinds of racks intended for traditional bikes...
Though honestly, I've never fully comprehended why -- for example, the rack in your photo claims to be rated for holding 3 traditional bikes, up to a total combined weight of 45kg / 99lbs. I have to assume a single Giant e3 without battery attached, is well below 45kg/99lbs!! (Strange, the Giant website doesn't even attempt to give a ballpark estimate of its weight!)
So to my mind, if that rack could take 3 bikes totaling 45kg, why couldn't it take 1 bike at, say, 25kg?
But -- the consensus seems to usually be that these multi-bike advertised racks still aren't recommended for doing that...
So long and short of it -- I can't chime in with an opinion, but I'm keen to hear from others who may have done this... (Perhaps all the cautions "don't do it" come from rack-makers who sell MUCH more expensive "e-bike" racks... ;)

If I was in your situation, I would try it -- very carefully.

Install the rack, put the bike on, push and tug on it every which way, see if it seems secure. Drive it around a little, avoiding any hard maneuvers or big bumps, see how it does, get out and make sure it is still secure. Drive a little further and try a few bumps, and some turns, some braking, then get out and check it again. Drive some more, try some even bigger bumps and harder turns and braking ... rinse, repeat. You'll soon know whether it is up to the task, at least short-term.

Over the long term, be sure to monitor everything closely and look for any bolts loosening, metal bending, straps fraying, sheet metal denting, etc.

Thanks all ive paid and pickd up this rack the shop assistant sells the e bikes at torpedo7 and I put the weight facts past him he said exactly what you all have.
Have to admit it looks slightly weird stroped down on my boot but the rides should be worth it. I will keep you all informed cheers for the input

Morning BsaMase,

I've been putting my 40lb ebike along with another 20+lb traditional on my 10 y. o. trunk mounted Saris bones 801 bike rack for a couple of years now with no detrimental effects. The rack is rated 3 bikes at 35lbs each.

Oh, I see you already purchased.

Also I see your car is in pretty good shape. What I do is place a multi-folded water saturated Bounty towel between the rack and the trunk surface to prevent scratching the paint.
