Where is everyone getting their Rear Hub Direct Drive Kits ?

I got mine from https://dillengerelectricbikes.com/. But they only sell complete kits with a battery and they run $700. They are an Aussie company with a full-fillment center in California. It's a great kit and they're totally trust worthy.

If you find such a kit for $400 then, no, that won't be from a trustworthy seller.

I already have a battery.

Just need a motor kit with the basics

Is it reasonable to find just a motor kit without a battery for around $400

600 for direct drive or geared hub drive. They've been in business a long time.

Jason is a good guy but their motors are overpriced for the quality. That said, they are super at support. Still good d rather have a Grin 9-continent DD, MAC or Ezee GD. I no longer offer support for lowball chintzy kits.

it’s not nice when you have to do it twice.

unless of course you want to invest the time and frustration of being your own support.

Got my 48v 1000w kit from ´Calibike. The bike died but the motorwheel still good as new.
As a spare, it will plug into my current bike. less torquey, more rpm. good 12g spokes.
Rafe is a good guy. He gets chided by the “experts” but still he continues to treat folks right.

Are their motors manufactured in Germany or Japan ?
Making them materially superior to Chinese motors?

Are any of these motors manufactured in the USA?

Reason I ask is I thought all these motors come from China.

I guess what I'm asking is exactly what makes their motors better?

Ebikeling sells a decent direct drive rear motor kit in your budget range. He answers the phone, or he used to. He was based in Chicago when I last dealt with him. Link is below.

Two years ago, the same kit was only $225 on ebay. Such is inflation. He was selling kits in 2015 when I bought my first (geared) motor from him. Still works great. I have a second motor of his also running, and one spare that I'll probably never need. There are some flaws in his geared motor kits, but the direct drives are very good. For a time, other ebike kit vendors on ebay stole his brand "ebikeling" and stuck it on their ads, as they will copy anyone who is successful.

Chinese motors of course. My motors were made by a sweat shop called Dongdiane.

My current bike has a Das KIt German motor stock, but the kits are still available as far as
i know. It is a strong motor that seems to get stronger as in breaks-in. I think it has metai gears?
it was tight & whined some for the first 500 mi., boocoo torque.

I don't have any experience purchasing or riding a bike with a direct drive hub kit but I'm curious about why you chose this type?
FWIW I bought an inexpensive rear geared hub motor kit on Amazon for ~$270 plus tax early this year. China based seller with US stock. They promptly replied to a couple questions about controller settings and sent a replacement KT display/control pad because of a minor flaw (broken control pad handlebar strap) and sent two replacement brake motor inhibitor switches because one of the originals didn't work. I still use the original display without a problem and use the replacement as well as the extra brake inhibitor switch on another DIY bike). The kit works great, has excellent assist and is probably as high quality as other similar type kits including KT waterproof connector peripherals. I don't think that spending more necessarily provides any assurance of better quality or support.

I see the price was increased to $332 since my purchase.

The price of everything has gone up some stuff as much as 50%. A lot of businesses seem to be
trying to make up losses by gouging for every dime the market will bear. Those extreme are only
hurting themselves. I needed a couple carribeaners for a project. the local hardware store wanted
3 times what I ended up paying a Henery´ś. Convenience is not worth triple!

While many are happy with those budget drives, they are featureless compared to eBikes.ca motors.
Most budget DD motors are clones. Copying 9-Continent. Yes the kits are twice the price wanting to pay but everything about Grin kits is superior. I really like my Grin controllers. I can run any of my batteries, 36V, 48V, and 52V.

I have had a new one sitting collecting dust for nine months. It cost me $450. I can't get rid of it. No one wants a hub-drive after they ride a mid-drive up a steep hill.

Direct drive or geared?
I live on a small mountain, that geared hub does about as well as my tsdz2 or Yamaha mid drives do. I've also ridden it through much of the Columbia River gorge from Troutdale to near Hood River with thousands of feet of elevation gain. It has done amazingly well. No torque sensing but the kt controller has a simulated torque sensing setting (I think that is what it is anyway) which is pretty natural, for what it is.

This is neighborhood where I start from for rides from home. Was testing a trailer on another bike in this picture.

Beautiful place. You are lucky to ride there. It is a 29er, geared. You do have hills.
