Watching the peloton - Professional Road Racing thread 2026

Great drama. Hats off to Pog. I was hoping Tom would pip him, but christ he deserves that win after the crash and getting back. Amazing.

You guys have been following pro racing a longer than I have. Does it get any better than this?
Not for years. The crash helped open it up, was pretty sure that was Pog done for- the extra effort, even with Brandon dragging him back, the extra effort I thought would pay by the end but it could be MVDP suffered more in the crash, commentators kept mentioning blood on his hand and fingers and he wasn't descending as well as usual, just looked off even before the Poggio. Whereas with Pidcock winning that other Italian classic on Weds he looked in super form. Inches in it. Nothing else Pidcock could do.

Many have been saying lately that Pogi's taking the excitement out of pro racing. I think he just laid that to rest.

And Pidcock! Can't wait to see how this season unfolds.

I'd like to hear from Pidcock, if he has any regrets. My take was he should have led the sprint, as Tadej would have a hard time coming around him. But maybe he knew that he could not hold it to the line, so his best option was to let Tadej lead it out and try and come around him. He was gaining at the line.

It's certainly the best race of 2026. Does it get any better than this? Depends what you consider better. But this one was one that I'll never forget. Outstanding racing by so many great riders. It's not all about Tadej.

That's the point Jeremy, without the crash Pog would likely have won easier. The crash levelled the playing field. Without it, it might have been a procession.

Though we'll never know. I'll be interested to see what MVDP says. And if Ganna just didn't have the legs today.

I don't know about that. Pidcock looked great, coming after a win this week. It's a long race. Everyone was tired. I had my "money" on Ganna, but he wasn't where he needed to be when it counted.

If WVA had caught those two with 300m to go, that would have been a race for the ages.

Great race!

This might be the best version of Pidcock I've seen. He's much better as a one day racer than a GC almost-contender.

Impressive ride by Wout - having to wait for a new bike at the crash and still working his 31 year old self back into almost contention. He said in an interview that he didn't realize Pogi and Pidcock were so close until the last couple km.

Also a good ride for Mads - first race back from injury and he was pulling the chase group up the climb. The mind was willing, but his legs were 'only' good enough for 4th place.
