Washington State's new ebike laws just passed.

Essentially what Washington State has done is killed the Class 3 ebike and returned to what was defined in HR727 for a compliant "low speed electric bike" that can be sold in all 50 states. I wonder if the people that already own Class 3 ebikes will petition for grand fathering of those ebikes.

Note: I made a mistake on this....an article referenced does not ID the classes and implied anything assisting past 20mph was not compliant. I do find it troubling that the regulation requires a speedometer on Class 3 which is a clear violation of the preemptive clause in HR727.

Petition, modify, comply, or take chances I suppose...

I’m kind of confused by the actual text of this law compared to what’s been claimed or inferred.

where does it say a class three bicycle is an electric motorcycle and requires a drivers license? the new restriction says “exceed 20mph when solely powered by the motor.” maybe there’s another new law? this one just seems to be clarifying that something outside of the 3 class system is still not a bike lol.

Nobody that rides with common sense will be bothered. Its to get the kids on the e-motorcycles off the roads. I ride (PEDAL) what would be classified as a class 3 (1000w), but only exceed 20mph coasting down hill. I'm not too worried about anyone bothering me since nobody would even know my wattage just looking at me ride...

In many places just "looking" legal would get you by. Wearing high vis jacket or vest and lights in the daytime would make you look like a tool but not in the eye of the police.

Really? Here in coastal SoCal, most bikes have daytime running lights on (as required by law), and many riders wear high-vis or at least brightly colored tops of some kind.

If that makes us all look like tools, so be it. But it never struck me that way, and personally, I won't ride without these things.

The ones who look like tools (and also fools) are the many teen and pre-teen male riders in all black — including their ubiquitous black hoodies and full-face helmets. They see this uniform as some kind of outlaw statement, but they're really the ultimate conformists.

The roadies seem less concerned about high-vis clothing, but they tend to run with more and brighter lights than anyone else.

traditionally jerseys have been very brightly colored! the more recent trend towards gravel and mixed riding has merged road-function clothes with the muted colors of mountain bike or traditional outdoor gear. while I appreciate the look, i wouldn’t do it for any ride with the potential for higher speed interaction with inattentive motorists. in the city, it’s not really necessary.

my setup for anything other than a commute or grocery run or ride with the kids, is black shoes, black shorts, a neon green, yellow, or orange shirt, neon yellow or orange socks, my current helmet is red, plus the solid/flashing-when-someone-is-closing-fast red light of the varia. the socks are a key part - it’s been shown that the thing which most immediately says “cyclist” to a drivers’ brain is the rotating motion of the feet.

Most of the bicycle commuters I see wear hi viz clothing. Roadies wear lycra and casual cyclists just wear whatever. I don't see too many kids in black edgelord outfits, but I am sure they are out there. I have a close friend that used to wear nothing but black when he was younger and even in his 30's and 40's. Black tees, black jeans, sunglasses. He seems to have moved past that finally or his wife talked him out of it.

Well the guys on racers are much more fashion conscious hey. The current style I believe is muted greys and multi-colored pastel shades. Matching sox naturally. Personally I think there should be a law against it, but that's a discussion for another topic.

More roadie hate. Sigh.
lol. No it's not HATE! It's just poking a stick at, for fun.
It's like this "I've learned to ignore the smug EV culture. If it works for you, have at it, but don't ram it down..."

Funny story, I was set upon on a forum years ago when on a topic about taking energy snacks on rides I had the audacity to say I took chocolate! Little did I know that a large contingent of Vegans resided there and of course chocolate has "Animal Products" in it 😁

it’s not really hate, it’s jealousy and envy of people who are healthy, fit, dedicated, and having fun doing something that doesn‘t trash the environment or kill animals or generate tax revenue or support big oil or whatever it is that offends people. grown adults name calling and making fun of other peoples’ (usually quite functional) clothing choices? really?
