Vado 4 SL EQ Twitchy steering

I’ve found that my Vado SL steering is very twitchy. I find I can’t trust it to ride hands free. It has been dangerous a few times. It happens across a wide range of speeds. I do have a riser on the handlebar.

Any suggestions?

I am not sure what you mean by "riser on handlebar?"

I recently had the shop swap a new stem that was higher than the one my Creo had. When talking with the mechanic, he mentioned another way to raise me even higher would be with a shorter stem. BUT his warned me that bringing the handlebars closer to the steerer tube, the more twitchy the handling would be. I did not want that so compromised on just the higher stem at the moment.

The riser extended the stem about 4” higher giving me a more upright position.
That's a lot of rise! By doing that, you are changing the center of gravity to the rear as well as the steering leverage, taking weight off the front tire, and possibly making it feel more twitchy.

This reminds me of my motorcycling days when I went on a cross-country tour with my rear rack and side bags fully loaded down, and got into a bit of what was called a "high-speed wobble" due to the changed c/g. I definitely felt the handling difference throughout the trip!

Thanks for the reply.

I suspected something along these lines. I’ll have to pay more attention to see if my weight distribution is rearward when the steering feels twitchy. Then I’ll have to figure out how to have both the more upright position and more balanced weight distribution.
