I forgot to look at the motor but assume it is a sync-drive. Are all of those motors made by Yamaha? Do these motors hold up well?

I test road that bike in two different frame sizes. On the first I didn't hear a sound from the motor and I shifted it through all power levels. On the second it whined like an Aventon through all levels. Which is normal and does the noise signal a problem?

I noticed on the website this bike is showing in only one color and that is "black diamond". These two bikes were "Chameleon". Is that a different year? I don't see a year designation at the Giant website either.

Yes, it's Yamaha and rest assured these motors hold extremely well. A Trance E+ 2 Pro I used to own has now 25,000 km under the hood, no issues.

Please watch this video from 00:24. This is how a Syncdrive sounds in off-road riding conditions. If the noise during your demo ride was similar then no need to worry.

Most probably. The Chameleon colour is gorgeous! Even if some e-bikes in the store were from different model years, it is not that important as it is for a car. What's the battery capacity?

Thanks for your reply. The noise level is just as you show in the video for the second bike. I guess the first bike is the outlier since I heard nothing but I could tell that the assist was clearly working.

Looking at Giant's website for this bike and looking at specs for the chameleon color it appears both have 625wh batteries but the chameleon version has 80nm of torque and the black which I guess is newer has 85nm. Not sure if there are any other differences in specs.

The five newton-meters torque difference is roughly equivalent to just 30 W on the mechanical assistance power. Not too much!

I guess these e-bikes can both be older models. The current E+ 3 Pro has a 750 Wh battery, and that really matters!

The latest Giant Trance E+ 3 Pro. The colour is Cordovan/Copper Coin.

According to the website I see for the bike pictured in your reply it isn't marked as the "Pro". I haven't shopped for mountain bikes in a long time. My last and current is a 2015 Giant Trance 1 which came with composite wheels and is very light. I'm ready for an electric version.

Back then Giant's website was much more user friendly and you could easily tell what year and which bike you were looking at. Now it's all rather confusing.

It makes me wonder how long you will be able to get replacement batteries for these bikes. For example, they are currently out of stock for the 625wh battery and these bikes become boat anchors without their assist.

Here is a link to the comparison of the two bikes I'm talking about. https://www.giant-bicycles.com/us/comparison/gc@3185-gc@2815

I have a Giant Stance. Mine is almost silent. My first one was not so quiet and required replacement.
Yammy motors are awesome!
