Theft prevention/recovery?

Make sure you go through the police. I went to the place my AirTag said my stuff was and didn't know if I was going to get away without getting shot. The police told me to never do that again but to come to them for help.
This is good advice. If you report the bike theft to the police and recover it yourself, you could be arrested for stealing your own bike. Happened to a college roomate with his car.

Also, if you go on someone else's property to recover your stolen bike, you could be charged with trespassing or breaking & entering.

An option for a PIN is contained in most aftermarket displays and has been for years. All of the KT displays (hub motors) and all of the BBSxx displays have them and have had since at least 2015.
Check your display's user manual (assuming you even have one... most people have never seen theirs).

I personally never use them because I have found stuff like this tends to work best keeping the rightful owner out of their own system rather than a 3rd party. I've seen plenty of help requests from people who forgot their PIN or there is some malfunction and the person is now locked out of their bike. Another one you see a lot is Person B buys a bike from Person A and doesn't take remembering the PIN seriously, parks the bike for awhile and then posts in a user group asking how to bypass the forgotten PIN (you have to buy a new display).
I'm pretty sure that my Evelo Atlas and the wife's Omega have the 'pin lockout' feature. But, even though I consider myself tech savvy, I've been leary of setting them up for the reasons you describe. Mostly because inputting data on these displays is 'clunky' and a single wrong key press could potentially lock you out when attempting to set up this feature. The user manuals can also lack details and that's a real concern.
I may go ahead and give it a try but the Atlas uses Bafang and the Omega uses Dapu so that complicates things.

I have a KT display and won't set a password for the same reasons.

I'd suggest getting your wife to record a video of your screen as you enter a password.

That should help you to back track if you mess up.

I know what you mean,..

I stand corrected. The Evelo Atlas and Omega DO NOT have a password PIN lockout feature! The 'password' category shows on the Atlas settings menu but is disabled and the Omega never had one.
