The tale of two motors

So here's my decision process that I'm going through. I have my list narrowed down to two bikes. I'm looking at a 500w mid-drives and one is a Dapu motor from a shop that is local (ish) to me, around 3 hours and the other bike has a Bafang M600 from across the country. As far as I can tell, i don't have a LBS near me that will work on anything that I don't buy from them (and all they all sell are 250/350 mid drives). I've read here and there to stay away from Dapu mid-drives but I do like that the shop is nearby. I like the style of the Bafang bike better and the parts (shifters, brakes, etc) are a notch above...but it's across the country. Any thoughts?

Are you willing and able to do your own work when necessary? Do you have Velofix or other mobile service available? It would seem like the answer to those questions should reveal the bike to go with. Even the best bikes available are going to need attention once in a while.

Certainly willing...able? that's a different question. :) I checked and yes, I have a Velofix available around me

If willing, and MAYBE able, plenty of people learning to DIY by asking questions/seeking info in places like this one. There's a ton of experience available from plenty of people willing to help.

Absolute worst case, you have to call Velofix to come bail you out of a spot.....

Buy the bike you like best! -Al

What M600 bike are you looking at? You posted in another thread you were interested in a Spark RX which is now branded as Rize and the RX is now an Ultra motor. For commuting I'd take this over a M600 or Dapu all day long.

Yeah I was looking at that bike but due to local regs a 1000w motor wont work for me so I'm looking at the FLX roadster

With either of those two mid drives I Wouldn't worry about whether an LBS is nearby or whether you can repair them yourself. The internals are not complicated on either. And they are cheap enough to throw away if they completely fail, and then need to replace. Be 'nice' to them and they'll be nice back to you. ;) like having a puppy.

You can program the Ultra to 750W or whatever you want to make it legal. M600 you cannot program which can create more legality issues. For example, I think your only option to make the M600 legal with throttle is to order it as Class 1 and add throttle. If you order it Class 3 with 28 mph assist cutoff there is no way to program the throttle to cut out at 20 mph like you can with the Ultra. I don't think you can even adjust the pedal assist speed to cut out at 20 unless you order it that way. I'd think you'd want the flexibility of the Ultra for class 3 for commuting. M600 is also a louder motor. Unless you are worried about weight I would not get the M600.

Interesting. Thanks. I will consider that. I appreciate your response.
