Tesla Battery Cells 2170 - aka 21700

Yes and no. The reality is they will be the only ones that have these batteries for the foreseeable future. Their Tesla 3 and Powerwalls are in very high demand. It will probably take 2 years of production using the factory's full capacity. And that's at current preorder levels. Once they go online and Model 3 becomes a tangible product. Lots more will jump on the bandwagon. However, Samsung own 21700 won't be too far behind in 2021. 18650 will still be the dominant standard for at least the next 4-5 years from e-bike manufacturers.

The team published their work in the journal energy & environmental science early this year.
This could be a real game-changer!

I hope it does come to fruition. I had a friend of mine look into his paper. He's has a PhD in material sciences working on his post doc research on batteries at Argonne national lab. He seemed a little hesitant to give it the thumbs up. Basically the gist is if it wasn't for Goodenough's name, the paper might not be taken seriously. Also it is an absolute race against time as he is 94 years old. If he's right, it would change everything.

In the vaping world we use basically the same batteries used in the EV world. The standard has been 18650 for some time (batteries such as Samsung 25R, LG HG2, Samsung 30Q, etc.) but we are already starting to use the 20700 and 21700 form factors which are anticipated for new e-bike battery pack designs. A couple of examples:

Sanyo is owned by Panasonic which is partnered with Tesla in the Gigafactory BTW. Samsung wants in that game badly however, and is already shipping these two batteries (the 30T unfortunately only in evaluation quantities thus far).

Anyway, my sense is the new higher energy density 2x700 batteries will be coming to e-bike battery packs sooner than we might think. And we won't have to wait until Tesla/Panasonic scales up to the point of EV and Powerwall excess production.
