Temperature sensor

I’m using EggRider display can I connect it to register the motor temperature? I’m gonna change to the ASI controller when it arrives, same EggRider display so how do I get the display to monitor the motor temperature? Help Thomas.

There are actually 2 temp sensors - 10k thermistors - one in the controller and one in the motor..

I’m fairly certain that is not an option. The thermisters provide only an error code. And the motor should shut down. Riders wanting a numerical value often use a wired aquarium style thermometers. See electric bike blog, Karl shows an install.

FWIW you can communicate with the firmware writer from EggRider on their Facebook page.

Thanks Thomas, do you recommend these shutdown values from the thermistors without a visual readout? My question is do you now what the temperatures at which the thermistors shut down the motor to prevent motor damage.

“Karl was right. I installed a temp gauge on my BBS02 and have been pushing it past 145 to 155 degrees. This morning the plastic gear melted. Karl at Electric-Fatbikes guidelines:
140F + Stop riding and let it cool
130F + Don’t use full throttle, only half throttle
120F + Take it easy
110F or less go whole hog

EggRider do a great job. Emil has worked very hard to interpret a piece of hardware/software to make the EggRider display work properly together with Bafang motors.
For me, I’m getting used to these things called WIKIS, any hints would be appreciated.
I don’t want to bother George or Emil anymore.

The Bbs02 has no cooling fins and may not have an internal temperature sensor. I don’t know.
At 110 degrees the nylon gear will start to soften, add force and friction to a soft gear and it’ll FAIL big time. So my feeling is that Bafang have this mechanical failure built in so you don’t melt the insulation on internal wiring.
Luna Cycles have a metal replacement gear but if you run the motor at high temperatures you WILL melt the wire insulation.

I support Replacement parts from California eBike LLC. We send out parts everyday. We seldom sell any nylon gears. It’s not a problem for a majority of riders.

Hi Thomas, I’m not suggesting there was any problem at all with the gears (nylon or steel), I’m just offering a suggestion; that the nylon gear is meant to fail at high temperatures to protect the motor wiring.

It's also there to ensure the rest of the gearing is protected, including the gear it would have replaced... And it makes the motor substantially quieter. So, spare parts inventory consists of basically nylon gears, which are cheap since they can be extruded.
