ST3 connectivity

Ordered ST3 to replace my ST1.
Rode bike home from dealer yesterday.
Felt heavy and sluggish- difficulty with going up even smaller hills at level 3.
Assumed I needed to change app settings, which is new to me as ST1 tech is obviously different.
(I had downloaded Omni app at dealer, but could not connect- dealer said WiFi was spotty there).
Today at home-Cannot connect Stromer app or Bluetooth via my iPhone, though I have no other connectivity issues with any other app or Bluetooth device.
Stromer app in constant “loading “ mode.I tried deleting and reinstalling app.
Dealer stromer specialist is unavailable for a few days.
Anyone else experienced this?
Don’t want to ride bike until this is resolved.
Thanks

I had this issue with my ST5 when I first got it, and with other Bluetooth devices with the iPhone 12 Pro. I find that often it can be resolved by turning the Bluetooth off on the iPhone and back on again. Sometimes a couple of times. Once it finally connects the first time, it generally has no problems after that.

Thanks for response.
Not only Bluetooth issue, but stromer Omni app as well.
Tried shutting down phone and restarting, deleted and reinstalled app, checked settings for any potential problem.
Tried using a different phone type as well- an android phone.
Nothing worked—app will not be connect to stromer and Bluetooth will not pair.
Concerned about faulty software- and if so, lack of quality control.

question: do you think my bike sluggishness and heaviness is due to my inability to correct settings? Concerned about bike’s lack of responsiveness.
When I start pedaling from stopped position, for ex. I feel no “kick”, as if I am using only leg power to get going.

No, none of that sounds like proper behavior from your bike. Stromers are very responsive, they never feel sluggish. I believe your dealer may need to get involved and make sure it is set up correctly. Did you try fully powering down and restarting the bike, then trying to connect your phone? Also, make sure you use the + button to put the bike in support mode 1, 2 or 3 when riding. If you are in Bicycle mode, the motor will not provide assistance and be very sluggish. You should not need the Omni app for your bike to operate properly. The app is very handy for collecting data about your rides and fine tuning the performance, but the sluggish performance you are describing is not normal.

Some other things to try:

1) Stromer ST1 X, ST2, ST2 S, ST3, ST5: Performing a reset
If your Stromer ST1 X, ST2, ST3 or ST5 should no longer react to inputs via the power button and touchscreen, you can force a restart. Press and hold down the power button for at least 10 seconds. Your Stromer is switched off and can then be switched on again in the usual way.

2) If your bike is a new bike (i.e. not a used older one), make sure you downloaded the Stomer Omni app, not the one called Stromer Omni BT

3) Instructions for connecting your smartphone to your bike
  1. In the bike's MENU, press “BLUETOOTH”.
  2. Before you can make changes to the Bluetooth settings, you are first prompted to enter your PIN.
  3. Press “CONNECT”. Make sure that the smartphone that you want to connect is close by and is visible for new Bluetooth connections.
  4. Visible devices are displayed on the Stromer OMNI Interface C. Select the smartphone to be connected.
  5. Check your smartphone and confirm any Bluetooth queries that appear.

As Abek said this is not normal.

Have you tried re-calibrating of the torque sensor? You can find in the sensor submenu. While not on the bike (pedals has to be released, your feet must not be resting on them) do a torque sensor calibration. See if this solves your problem.

I have tried all of the above.
The day after returning home with this bike, I tried riding it up a hill in level 3, a bit of struggle to get up hill.
I then rode my husband’s ST1 up same hill, very easy in power mode.
Thanks for feedback, I will contact dealer when he is available.

I had an ST1 for 8 years, rode it quite a bit- 200+ miles per week- I could feel surge when increasing power- could feel power surge in eco when initially taking off.
On this ST3 I feel like I am using my own power - surprised at level 3 - lowest gear- still struggled up a hill.🤔

I haven’t ridden the ST1, but on my ST5, when climbing steep hills, I have to get up off the seat and put my full weight into the climb. When I do that the bike responds very well. I think your ST3 may have some issues that need attention. I hope your dealer is capable and experienced and can get your bike right. I’m really enjoying my Stromer, but a large part of the success of eBikes is having competent bike shops that have the skills to keep them running optimally.

Thanks- I took on some pretty significant hills on my ST1. And they were definitely difficult in “power”mode- ST1 assist version of level 3.

Yesterday I rode my ST3 up a smallish hill, should have been easy, then used my husband’s ST1 to compare, ST1 zipped up hill with ease.
ST3 felt heavy - I felt the weight of the bike.
Hopefully dealer can help- at this point I much prefer my old ST1.

The BT is independent from the OMNI app. You have a valid PIN for the ST3 display (and the first time password for the app)?

Your phone should have a nice nickname, this helps to identify your phone in the list of all BT devices which your ST3 founds.

The limpness of the ST3 is caused by mistreatment of the sensor. If you're a mechanic, release and tighten with the appropriate NM (use calibrated wrench) all screws at the rear end - carefully.

My app will not connect to bike.
Dealer told me that I need to see 3G on screen, which I cannot- I only see bars.
He has told me that after I am able to connect, I can change torque, agility and speed- that I am currently in “standard “ (other options are city, snow, tour and custom). I had attempted to do that- but app keeps indicating it cannot connect to my bike.

Someone on this thread said app has nothing to do with bike performance- that I should be able to change settings directly on my bike.
That doesn’t seem to be the case as the only setting options are torque and callibration.
Dealer is directly contradicting this, saying I need to find a 3G spot so I can change settings on my app in order to find the ride that works for me.
Maybe I will drag bike into my home and see if I can connect!

a) Do the opposite. Inside a house, cell phone connections are weak due to the walls.
b) set "all in" on the display. (= max torque sensor and max brake power) The app allows you to set weaker settings, e.g for riding in a pedestrian zone.

Thanks

Number 3 is high assist mode. That should give you a lot of power. I was wondering do you get no support at all? How about flats ? Change between levels 1-3 and see if they make any difference.

Your dealer is probably talking about the custom mode, assist level 2. To adjust it you need the phone app and the bike having reception(you may take the bike out if it is indoors so see if the reception is better). However that is not your problem right now. Set the torque sensitivity to maximum and see if it helps.

I understand power settings- I had an ST1 for 8 years, and because of prior Stromer I am able to notice difference.
ST3 is set to highest torque available.
ST3 should have higher power and torque due to it’s motor- I am noticing the opposite, less power, than ST1. I feel weight of ST3 from a stop to go position - or when slowing down to take a corner and then accelerating at level 1- almost feels as if I forgot to turn bike on.
Once I get going on flat I am fine, but I also should feel more power on hills at level 3. Instead I feel less than my ST1.
I took ST3 on same hills that I had ridden on ST1-
With ST3 at level 3 and lowest gear I felt that I may not make it- never had that experience on ST1.

Regarding Omni app, I noticed that app was indicating my bike being in a location about ½ mile away.
I rode it to that location and was finally able to use app to change settings to custom and increased agility, speed and torque.
Possible new issue? If my bike were to be stolen, how would GPS find bike if app indicates my bike to be in a area that it isn’t?

Will try some hills tomorrow.
Thanks for input.

8 years is very impressive. Unfortunately I don't have any experience with ST1 and I am sure you already knew my suggestions. (Checked online and saw that it has two different versions, one is 20mph limited and winded more for hill climbs).

Do you know the grades of the hills you are climbing?

I was on several different hills, unsure of grades, have been on much tougher hills on ST1, these hills should have been no problem.
Thanks

ST3 should have higher power and torque due to it’s motor-
It has, for sure, but remember what I wrote about bike mechanic skills ant the rear end of the bike!

This is the most common reason for poor support if the re-calibration fails.
