specialized Como 4.0 chain vs specialized Como 4.0 Belt IGH, which is the way to go?

These two models are almost identical. Here are the main differences for the IGH version compared to the chain version:
  • It is heavier than the chain version
  • It is more expensive than the chain version
  • It requires no maintenance (the chain version requires the drivetrain maintenance)
  • It requires operating a twist shifter (no problem for most of riders). The chain version has a traditional click shifter
  • It is less efficient than the chain version, and a worse climber than the chain version
  • It hardly allows any gear ratio modification
  • It is harder to remove the rear wheel of the IGH e-bike for a field repair of a flat than it is with the chain version.
As the IGH version of Como is decidedly a city e-bike, I would recommend it to riders who do not want to do more to their e-bike than occasional tyre re-inflation, unless there are very steep hills around, and somewhat bigger weight (3 lb) and price are not a deal breaker.

It depends on your background and preference.

If you are a traditional biker and love your derailleurs, then stick with what you like and are familiar with.

If you are a traditional biker that never really cared for the maintenance, adjustments, grease, inability to shift at stand still of a derailleur, or if you are new to bikes in general and appreciate simplicity and comfort, then definitely go for the IGH
