RELIABILITY ?

About 12-18 months ago i simply got tired of reading about poor reliability from Specialized and Shimano and all the BS, excuses, etc...
Where are we today?
Did any of these 2 improved their reliability?
How about RockyMountain?
How about the new Bosch?
I do not have a car so i am looking for a HT i can pedal to the trails, have some fun than pedal back.
I do lots of distance so i need to roll and stay away from shop/repair.
The last thing i want is a 22 kilos bike to pedal up hills and back home unassisted.
Should i wait untill we can trust Ebikes to do what they pretend they can do.
 
I'm at 4000 miles with a ebikeling.com geared hub motor & a luna battery. People have said nice things about ebikeling batteries too. The cover comes loose sometimes, use blue loktite on the screws & carry a phillips screwdriver for when it starts thumping. In a heavy rain the throttle will stop working. Needs the hair dryer treatment. No display. The ebikeling one fogged up, I pitched it. Throttle has red yellow green voltage LED's. Don't climb full power more than 15 minutes straight. I run 77 hills in 30 miles, rollers, up to 15% 100', no problem.
Simpler are DD hub motors, don't overheat after 15 minutes of full power climbing, but chew up a lot of watthours doing it. Better performance at medium speeds on the flat.
Use double nuts on the motor shaft, counter torque them 20 ftlb. I had to make mine with a tap from victornet.com 14 mm x 1.75
I use 8 speed chain for 5000 mile wear. No motor torque on the chain.
Don't use shimano 7 speed rear axle, the race comes loose and drops the balls. About a 1000 mile life part. 8 speed shimano I have 5000 miles on, no problems. Don't use shimano 6 speed axle, it is 5/16" diameter and breaks. Use jaguar or clarks SS lubricated control cables for less breakage and less stretching causing constant adjustments. Tektro mechanical disk brakes 160 mm have been trouble free, pads lasted 3000 miles. Electric switch break handles have longer levers, I like those over the short OEM ones.
Use industrial crimp terminals & 12 ga wire for the battery-controller connection, not those silly push in patented things that come with brand specific batteries. Insulated .250" flags or .157" bullet connectors, crimped on with a klein or ideal tool. Use male for + and female for -, don't plug backwards. Have to cut a few strands off for 12 ga to fit blue terminals. Terminals from TE connectivity, Panduit, T&B, Ideal, 3M, Dorman, none of that ****ese garbage. Those melt out at 30 amps. My luna battery came with XT90, the mates I soldered broke off 30 miles from home. So I cut the XT90 off & replaced with flag terminals, that I had out at the summer camp.
Protect controller from rain by hanging wires down. Protect battery from rain by pointing wires down, backwards, and wrap with a plastic bag & shipping tape. I put insulating foam under the plastic bag, inside an aluminum angle frame. Don't let battery freeze, I take mine off winter & put under a heat pad. Geared hub motor pedals fine without power in winter or when you run out of charge.
