Question: Best Electric Bike for "Companion Passenger Seat"

Dear Folks,

I'm a 63 year old fellow, with a young wife and 3 kids, I've not been in good health for about 8 years but am beginning to recover. My income decreased dramatically during this time and so last year my wife started her own business to make ends meet. She uses the car everyday and we cannot afford a second. I need cheaper transportation for doctors appointments, business meetings AND picking up the kids from school from time to time. I also want to exercise and increase the intensity over time as I intend to get my strength back and resume being a stud.

I've reviewed 49cc gas engines scooters, electric mopeds and electric bikes. I've put more hours into it than I gave my post high school education. I've come to the conclusion that the Juice Rider makes the most sense and its under $3000 price does not exceed that very limit I've seen.

It will do the job certainly, but it is such a "no frills model" that, in truth, I'm trying to avoid it. I'm a gadget freak and this guy doesn't even have a speedometer, nor headlights or even any shock absorbers, and the wheels...well I'm not a giant, but I'm not form Oz either.

However, I've come across the Companion Passenger bike seat www.thebikeseat.com that in itself, really impresses me. The manufacture says that most bikes (including the electrics) can accommodate it's mounting as long as the rear axles size is pretty standard. I can check a model for this straightforwardly by merely asking the company.

I'm just wondering if electric bikes, like the Pedego line or any other brand's, are made to hold the weight of a passenger on the back. My weight is 180 and any of my kids weight will not exceed more that 130 lbs for the next 3 years. Does anyone have any experience/knowledge that I can apply in choosing a more exciting bike that I could use the Companion on? I would appreciate it muchly. Best D. Kinson

I dont know about Pedego but usually for ebikes, the permissable total weight is around 260 lbs so in that sense I guess you would be approaching that with up to 310 lbs. But presumably the 130 lbs is all of them together and you would not be carrying all of them at the same time, so weight would not be an issue. Probably the critical part is the brakes and the general ability to control the bike. Normal racks arent designed carry more than 50 lbs, so I wonder about the Bikeseat's claim "supports passengers up to 200 lbs", although the supporting tubes on it do look quite sturdy. Anyway carrying a 200 lbs person on the back of your bike is no joyride for the one doing the pedaling, even with an ebike.

As a side note, these are now popular in some European countries:

Xtracycle has the equivalent. Their pictures show kids in a safety seat attached to the rack. The the Honda PCX strikes me as a better choice, except for the lack of exercise. The PCX is 10kW. The most powerful street legal Class 1 bicycle in Calif. is only 1kW. However, at certain weight ranges, they are very close.

In Thailand you can commonly see "whole families" riding on this type of scooters. A parent and a couple of small children, no one wearing helmets.
