Poor parking job by ebiker

Why would anyone do this? šŸ¤”

Because they are a complete XXXXhead!

Insert your own favourite word for someone who is completely self centred and has limited regard for others.

I get it that you want your investment safe and secure, but that's just plain ignorant.

There are several poor decisions in that photo. The lock looks long enough that you probably could have maneuvered the bike around to park it correctly.

The ONLY acceptable reason is he was meeting his mates at a pub. All were riding their bikes. He got there first, and was watching for his mates to show up and be pissed off. A prank only - and under his full view so he could adjust the situation when others showed up.

Otherwise, see my response above...

The thief went for a ride and decided to punish the builder with public ridicule?

Did you have a spare lock?

If he/she likes the spot so much, then someone should chain it to the the rack. Perhaps the message will sink in.

That bike looks strange and I'm thinking it's a home made set up.
I doubt that battery is Specialized, nothing recent so maybe a really old one?? And I just don't see Specialized marking their battery with a double decal.
And where is the motor? Attached to the crank?

It looks like a DIY mid-drive using a Bafang BBSXX motor attached to the bottom bracket, peeking out from behind the crank. I've seen the Bolton Ebikes video where he shows generic battery locks can be opened with key blanks, so perhaps the owner is trying to fool potential thieves into thinking this isn't a generic battery. They also could have just had some spare Specialized decals lying around.

Or, they really want everyone to think they ride a "Specialized Specialized, by Orbea," which wouldn't be too surprising considering the rest of the faux pas going on in that pic.

I see this type of parking once or twice a year at a busy saturday local farmers market, though never with an ebike. When I'm on my nothing special unpowered road bike I'm very tempted to lock it up in the correct orientation across the offending bike. The couple times I've met the rider it was a tourist or a clueless biking newbie. Much worse IMO are rental scooters which seem to preferentially get left in choke points.

Who cares???????????????????

Who cares that you dont care?????????????????

Person def should have parked their bike better so other bikers can use it, obviously.

Just like shopping carts, are you the type to return your cart or leave it?

ā€œThe shopping cart theory is the ultimate litmus test for whether a person is capable of self governing,ā€ it reads. ...To return the shopping cart is an easy, convenient task and one which we all recognize as the correct, appropriate thing to do. To return the shopping cart is objectively right. There are no situations other than dire emergencies in which a person is not able to return their cart. Simultaneously, it is not illegal to abandon your shopping cart. Therefore the shopping cart presents itself as the apex example of whether a person will do what is right without being forced to do it."

I don't know...in fairness, there are no other bikes around, and it appears to be later than normal commuter traffic hours. There's room for 3 more bikes - one on the other side, 1 at either end, and even a 4th if someone wanted to entomb this faux-Specialized in the middle (and teach them a lesson about bike rack demand). It's more likely they know the area better than we can discern from the photo. Once the sun sets, the rules definitely change. Theft and vandalism risks usually escalate dramatically. Parking along a drunk pedestrian lane opens up more complex social vandalism possibilities. College towns often have groups of erratic young impaired malcontents transiting by, which adds a few more risk points. It just takes one frat jerk to whack the rim to pop the spokes, and untrue your wheel so it no longer rotates. Then you're carrying your ride all the way home. Maybe this rider is a genius?

Could be the only guy in town with a bike šŸ˜„

Exactly. There is a bike rack here that I kind of did a similar parking style with. It was at the high school, on a Saturday morning, and not very many folks bike here on a busy day. My bike was new, the locking device hard to operate and way overdone for this area, so I finally just locked it the easiest way as I was about to be late for practice. No worries.
