I was wondering about the position of the handle bars. Why are the handle bars mounted in front of the stem? I've been playing around trying to make the bike more comfortable. I found the handle bars behind the stem more comfortable, more upright, easier on my worn out back. Is this detrimental in any way and why?

As long as there is no compromise in cable routing, IMO, there's no reason not do do it. The steering geometry is altered somewhat and requires a bit of practice. Usually, the stem forward design allows more bar to seat clearance but if it works for you, hey, go for it.

Good question. I think 6zfshdb has your answer.
Another alternative is a new handlebar. There are lots of them out there and not very expensive. Again you would have to make sure the cables will reach ok. I did this with my bike and it made it so much more comfortable.

The bigger plan is to get comfortable. An "upright" position is a very commonly sought after plan. A LOT of bikes (most?) must be modified some how some way to get that desired position. You do what it takes....

And yes, cable length can be an issue. Make sure you aren't stretching them when the handlebars are fully turned.
