Looking for new ebike in the new year, current bike has a terrible range only getting 25km using assist mode 3 majority of the time. Looking for commuting mountain style bike, budget approx $2,500 Canadian.

The Giant Roam E+ might work for you. Listed at $2699 but independent bike stores might negotiate a better price. If you’re looking for a more MTB style then the Giant Talon E+ 29 2 but it is a bit more expensive. The Roam would be a better commuter though.

Have you looked at the Surface 604 Shred?. If the 2020's are still available at a local LBS, the price range fits, and your requirements met. I have one and while I am beginning my entry into mountain biking, the Shred easily doubles as a daily commuter. I love mine, but on trail, beginning to see/feel the limitations of the SunTour XCM 30 fork. Other then that, it needs a Kinekt seat post IMO, but give it a look, it might be just what your looking for. Yes, it has a hub motor, but with torque sensor is so sensitive/responsive, it "feels" like a mid drive. Extremely powerful to for a 500W motor.

The 2021 Shred is already available, but the price increased about $200.

Commuting and mountain biking are two very different uses. Which would predominate?

you can buy a Biktrix Duo with a 750watt hub motor and two 48v 17ah batteries for $2546 CD
it will look like this but with a Hub motor

you may be able to upgrade to two 52v batteries but im not positive

Thanks for all replies, currently have a HOTEBIKE mountain bike with 500 watt motor. I use the bike to commute to work. I have looked at some of the bikes which have been recommended but I want stay in budget.

I was thinking of the Rize X bike or RadRover 5, anyone any experience with them,?

I have a Rize and it's great but the Biktrix Duo is only 45bucks over your budget and a far better fatbike than the Rize because the RizeX only has one battery..

The Biktrix bikes get a good name. I’ve seen a few good reviews myself.

Not sure I would pick 26x4 tires for commuting. That's a LOT of extra drag/rolling resistance. Just me, but thinking the 27.5 would make more sense. Maybe a 2.3-2.5" width. That should give a pretty decent ride vs. rolling resistance balance.

As far as dual batteries, if I could make my commute easily on one battery, there is little doubt that would be my plan. Toting the extra weight of that second battery around when it's not needed makes little sense here.

Not sure of my druthers regarding mid or hub drive here either. Hub is easier to ride, but the mid has far more power, to the point of overkill. Pretty sure the mid will mean more maintenance as compared to the hub. That would be a factor as well.

I just bought a Rize RX Pro (26x4 and Ultra mid drive), it's no commuter in my mind, but I would not hesitate to buy another Rize product. Nothing wrong with Biktrix either.

You're talking a Biktrix Duo on a serious discount now? The OP has a budget of $2,500(Canadian).

I totally get what your saying, 100% correct even.
I still think my bike was a great choice for my 1st Ebike, it’s just for dodging around too.
Some people buy a big comfy Merc for a two mile trip to the shops once a week... some even buy a Ferrari for the same thing.
Different folks, different strokes.... It’s a crazy old world we live in brother! LOL 👍👍

My ride to work is 6.5km, allot of up and down hills. So approx 65km a week, I only use throttle assist at traffic lights usually use assist mode 3.

Is this what you have?
I'm asking because if you like your current bike, it might be cheaper to replace the battery to high capacity one.
[Fast Delivery] Electric Mountain Bike Hybrid Bike in Canada(A6AB26-36V350W)
Yes sold bike last week, December-March I don't cycle to work. Use bike 9 months a year. I updated the bike when I bought it to a 500Watt motor and a 36Volt-14AH battery. Don't recommend these HOTEBIKEs to anybody, trouble after 6 weeks.

With this model bike, the OP can visit the store in Toronto, & take it for test ride to decide. Since the OP is in Toronto.

Some idea's for a budget

Volt Yukon 750 $1,799.00 USD Range 60 KM

Rad Rover 5 $1599.00 USD Range 45 miles

RIZE X $1999.00 USD Range 50 Miles

Juiced Rip Current S $2,299 USD Range 70 Miles (it has a 52V battery)

SONDORS MXS $1699.00 USD Range 50 Miles
(I own a Sondors they are good $ for $ value)

If you decide you can spend a little more, these ones, mid drives.

Dost Drop $2,799.00 USD up to 120 Miles Range with dual batteries

Biktrix Juggernaut Ultra1000 $2,599.00 USD Range 40 KM

Also consider shipping costs and if it is Canadian or American distribution....you never know when tariffs and brokerage fee's can bite you on the back end of the deal, I have taken some huge hits over the years after the sale is complete.

Go check out Amego ebike store on Richmond
They have a big sale on now
for your price range also look at the Aventon Level
Aventon Level is one of the very few Class 3 e-bikes available at some LBS in Canada(Aventon e-bikes doesn't have big distribution in Canada, but Amego carries Aventon).
