New Banfang Ultra Ebiker from Eagle, ID

Retired engineer, 69 YO. Recently purchased a Himiway step-through for my wife and an M2S Ultra HT mid drive with the Bafang Ultra motor/controller. Like to tinker with things so I have been reading everything I can get my hands on about programming the Bafang Ultra. Initially got the programming cable and software and connected to see what I could see. Have since purchased the Eggrider V2 display and obtained the app. Have been experimenting slowly with some of the PAS settings and are about to play around with the torque settings in an attempt to understand a little better what is going on and how it works. Have read a number of threads where others have been doing the same with varying degrees of success. Would like to connect with others with similar interests.

Welcome to the site. I'm a retired physicist 70 YO.
Afraid to mess with programming on my undocumented ebikeling motor. First the display fogged over from rain, then at 4500 miles a gear wore out. contemplating making a lost wax casting of a gear that isn't visibly worn, then pouring in some brass in a mold, but probably will never accumulate the tools necessary for that. Less see, a kiln to bake the mold, some firebrick to make a charcoal furnace, a ceramic pot to pour out the brass. Welding gloves & a faceshield. Nope, gloves welder & faceshield were just stolen. Acrylic resin gears would be easier, does acrylic have any shear strength? My Dad messed with acrylic resin back in the 60's.

Thanks indianajo. My undergraduate degree was in physics. I was a nuke engineer, retread to a systems programmer/engineer, and finally an electrical engineer in my 40 years at Knolls Atomic Power Lab so I couldn't help you with you question on shear strength. I grew up tinkering with many things with my dad as he was a mechanic at a refinery by day and an electrician by night. I got into programming along the line and it has been an interest/passion of mine since. There is some information on the Bafang motor/controller as some of the members here have experimented with it. The interface is fairly straightforward and it is relatively simple to methodically go about experimenting with the various parameters. The difficulty is that there still remains mystery about some of the parameters, the role of the torque sensor, and how they all work together. With the Eggrider V2 display and associated app, it now possible to get quantitative data in the form of graphs in addition to the qualitative feedback from riding. It is known that the motor is capable of handling a lot more current and therefore producing much more power. There are aftermarket controllers that are rated for 2.5kw. I will conservatively play around with some of the parameters as I enjoy riding here in the foothills of Idaho.

What kind of ebike do you have? Sounds like you ride a great deal - what kind of riding do you do? Ride by yourself?

I'd ride it a couple hundred miles before making changes. I'm on my fourth year with an Ultra and I'm perfectly happy with stock programming.

Hi TForan, This is my hope as well. I understand how humans can accommodate themselves to a system. I'm going to attempt this with my Ultra when it gets here. Have you a thread on here where you go into your process and techniques in getting along with the Ultra? Or would you care to make one? Would appreciate it much. Thanks. :)

I've got a pedal pusher 2017 yubabike bodaboda cargo bike that took me 5.75 hours to get home 9/18 into a 26 mph wind. Bleah! So I added a 1300 W ebikeling geared hub motor & 48v 17.5 battery that winter. No more 6 hours @ 140 bpm days. Could only find bafang hub motors stocked for fat wheels that winter, and that is not my bike.
The 3rd battery actually worked, after I proved the first two bad with a new $199 direct drive motor/controller/throttle/brakehandles setup. Got money back for the amazon battery that would collapse to 7 v & stay there. The ebay sun-ebike battery would bounce back to 48 v after I turned the motor off, had to load it down with 15 ohm 1250 watt resistor bank on my back steps to get it to collapse to 7 v. So I didn't get my money back on that one, had to haul it home with the cruiser pedal pusher.
My summer property is 24 miles out by car, 30 by back roads, higher windier and therefore cooler than the city. More wildlife out there too. I ride out there & back weekly in warm weather, yes by myself. No cellphone 1/3 the way first 18 years. This city has grocery/bank/dollar store in 3 blocks & HD Salvation Army big discount center 4 miles on snowplowed roads. Piped natural gas, water, sewers, & fiber internet is 2 blocks away. County doen't snowplow out at the summer camp, everybody owns a $50000 4WD pickup or SUV. My retirement doesn't cover payments on that and I only motorvate 2000 miles a year, new pickup would get check engine disease @ 25000 miles if I did buy one. What a fraud. All the bike riding has knocked 60 lb off my waist, 50 points off my cloresterol, 20 bpm off my rest pulse since I quit work in 2008. I only drive now on vacation, the wife's car Elanta.
Enjoy your programming. Since I programmed Intel 8080 SBC's at Ford Aerospace 1978, every programming project has sat there with a blank screen consuming watts. My computer never matches the software I buy, and my IT dept (me) is not smart enough or rich enough to stay up to date. This PC is 10 years old, runs Lubuntu 14 op sys, and Vanguard won't talk to it anymore. I bought a new HP laptop last spring to solve that problem but I hate Win 10 & Pres Xhi so much I didn't use it, and now it has been stolen. Bought an arduino (clone?) last winter then the vendor was shut down the next month before I downloaded the assembler yet. That was stolen too. Been building amps & mixers & repairing US/Jap made radios to satisfy my recorded music hobby. The burglar left all my home build projects (some of which work) but took all the PA stuff all the FM radios & $3500 of repair parts mostly not made in *****. ***** sole source or nothing now, or play it myself on a US made piano or autoharp. On Semi moved fab to ***** in 2019. Listening to WFMT music streaming on a 1" speaker in the Dell PC; really miss those Peavey SP2 speakers made in Mississippi.
BTW there is not much difference in speed or hill climbing between the 1300 w ebikeling and the 500 w Mac12 geared hub motor that replaced it. The Mac12 uses 4/5 the watthours of the ebikeling motor over the 30 miles uphill. The extra amps the ebikeling would consume just heat up the windings more. Happy experimenting with your parameters.

Not much to say about it. I haven't made any changes to the programming. I just ride the damn thing !
