Well, it finally happened, A warehouse with 200K pounds of lithium packs is burning out of control. They want to evacuate 5000 people from the area, and the firefighters think water won't help because "lithium explodes with water."

Why can't they get some knowledgeable people out there? When I was in college, I saw a chunk of lithium explode in water ...my roommate stole it from the chem lab, where it was packed in oil ...he almost blow up a toilet. But this is lithium in an electrolyte. It needs to be cooled down so the other cells don't blow up.

I wonder who owns all those packs.

Lithium batteries are flammable as much because of other battery components like electrolyte as because of the lithium. Remember that the lithium is not in metallic form either.

Will this be another excuse to raise battery prices?

I know a guy ( high school ) who took a lump of lithium about the size of hazel nut from the chemistry lab and tossed it into the toilet. Blew up real good. That kid had problems. Fun guy though. ;)
