Not a lot of maps needed. It's a very definitive trail. My wife and I section rode it about 7 or 8 years ago. Like you, we are going to do Deadwood to Hill City , Hill City to the Southern terminus in June. The Badlands and Black Hills rank right up there on the top of our "greatest hits" destinations. There are some YouTube rides that showcase the trail. Enjoy

Rail trails get my vote; the grades are usually pretty manageable for geezers like me, & provide a more relaxed way to enjoy
the scenery than roads. Poker?...oh yeah.

Bonus~ the trail ends/begins in Deadwood. The towns of Lead and Deadwood are very cool. Lead has several mining attractions and Deadwood is a historic site. They are just minutes from each other and both right on the trail. You can rent bikes if you aren't traveling with your own. I've ridden it a lot on my acoustic bike but I LOVE it on my ebike. I can go so much further in the day and the inclines are barely even noticed. Come visit SD- you will love it.
