Looking for a powerful mid drive kit.

If you're looking for a more powerful mid-drive kit with a torque sensor, you might want to consider the TQ HPR120S, which offers significantly higher torque and a more refined riding experience. It’s worth noting that while it’s pricier than the BBSHD, the improved performance and torque sensor could match your needs for a reliable upgrade. Also, look into the CYC X1 Pro Gen 2, which is known for its high power output and adaptability for various setups, while still being a solid choice for off-road and everyday use. Both options can handle the extra demand you're looking for in terms of power and functionality.
It sounds like you just arrived in 2024 after stepping out of a time machine. The TQ motor has been around forever, but is used largely by no one in 2024. Their height of visibility in the marketplace came when Haibike started using them like 4 years ago. Since then, they dropped them and went to Bosch and Yamaha motors. Plus the HPR120S was superseded by the HPR50. And the TQ motors in any event are not meant for DIY builds.

As for the Cyc motors... the X1 Gen 2 ... Jesus that one was awful. I can say that after owning an X1 (I still have it). The Gen2 abandoned the Gen1 Cyc controller which never worked right, and substituted an ASI controller that itself had so many problems they eventually decided they were unfixable. Cyc dropped the Gen2 for the Gen3 VESC-based a couple of years ago... and those were better but still had problems. The X1 gen4 which is the current version may in fact finally be a reliable motor (the gen2 had parts issues as well).

Thanks for the suggestions! I am working with the CYC folks on buying an X1 PRO at the same time I am talking to Luna cycle about a modified setup using a BBSD. The plan will be to take my steel framed hardtail Salsa Fargo and turn it into a <60 lb e bike. I did get the Zen worked out by changing the spindle on the gates belt drive and the bike now cruises easily at 20+ mph (PAS 2) but it is really heavy <78 lbs and we do a lot of bike transporting to different rides. I looked up the TQ HPR120S motor and the torque quoted is 120Nm verses the 160Nm quoted by Bafang.
If you are talking to Luna about a modified motor, I assume its an HD with their Ludicrous VESC-based controller? That would be a pretty serious solution. Prying a Ludi out of them is not easy but if they are willing in this twilight period for the BBSHD then more power to you.

Having been a longtime Cyc owner, I'd urge you to ONLY consider the X1 v4. I don't know if you are familiar with the history of this motor but it has been checkered. I would not put it in anywhere near the same class as the BBSHD for reliability. I liken the X1 Pro to a Ferrari... its exotic, cool, and a fun weekender. But you have to expect it to be a little fiddly and require an increased level of maintenance. Nothing can touch the BBSHD for reliability of all the motors that are out there competing with one another. Hopefully the V4 will finally be a reliable offering, but given that motor's history I would go with the more proven option.

With all of that said, this gives me hope for the v4 forward.

i did have a nice chat with Luna cycle and their new shipment of Bafang motors and kits should be at their store sometime in March. They said there are a number of build possibilities that include higher voltage controllers and batteries. They were a little concerned about heat if the bike was constantly in throttle mode. I explained that I typically ran my old BBSHD on PAS 2-3 and really want the extra power when pedaling up a really steep hill and they said they could put together a powerful off road kit. I will go over to their shop in LA next week to take a look at their powerful E-MTB.
