A friend of mine just sent me this pic from their kids office window this morning

Self immolating e-bike.

I am sure there is more to that story. The truth is, modern batteries are fairly safe and stable as long as they are not misused or damaged. I’m guessing this meltdown involved at least one of those things…

Of course , this also occasionally happen with gas bikes.

Weird circumstances downtown Manhattan , not charging at the time I would think. Difficult to see with the reflection. Looks to be tables and chairs, maybe a lunch area. Building picture was taken from is a hospital.

I think there are a variety of those rental bikes all over the place as well, and they are not cared for like we care for our own. When lithium cells do have an opportunity to show us what they are really made of - so to speak - they can do so very quickly and with a lot of fancy flair... @ExPatBrit Cool pic by the way. Thanks for sharing it. It is good to be reminded now and again.

Precisely why my battery is hung out on the front of the bike, and not between my legs. Big ball of flame is a rare but physically possible end of life event of a lithium Ion battery.

Lithium ion will be a thing of the past very soon with Toyota's solid state battery rolling out.

Over twice as energy dense, a lot safer because of nonflammable electrolytes. Also solid state batteries can charge super fast.

So 48V 40Ah ebike battery will be fully charged in 10 minutes, instead of hours like lithium ion.
Can’t happen too soon IMO! Question is, can you get one to fit your ebike/how much $$!

Who rides a gas bike into a building?

There are buildings called parking garages. Quite a few in NY.

With the reflections it’s difficult to figure out whether it is inside or not.
Yeah, I meant like in the lobby of an office bldg, which is what it looks like. But you’re right that it’s hard to tell if it’s inside or out.
