Ikea belt-drive breaking

I heard these were the Conntinental system, not the Gates one but haven't verified.

Yes Continental belt. At least one person used the Sladda as a donor bike for a front hub kit conversion, hope he got his money back.

Because some ebikes are now running toothed belts, I felt it worthwhile to post the Bicycle Retailer article. If a belt can be broken on that Ikea pedal bike, it raises the possibility of ebike failures with their heavier stress loads. Just an FYI. Gates-style belts are extremely strong, Harley uses them and there is likely one spinning the camshaft in your car. In a bicycle application a belt is required to be very narrow and have lighter plies to keep it flexible which can reduce its strength rating.

I'd place big money on material failures over engineering failures in the design. My wood lathe has a tiny belt about the size of a sewing machine belt. Transmits power from a 3/4hp electric motor. It's not that bicycle belt is narrow and lighter. It's the material. When you have to make a price point that IKEA shot for, you aren't going to get materials that are successful in use for Harleys and automotive cam belts. Probably made at the same place that makes rubber products sold by Harbor Freight. Ever smell the Chinese rubber in that place?
