I Was Caught Speeding !

Well not really but, they have these speed detection signs in schools zones and because I was going my Ebikes max speed of 32km/hr, it picked me up as going too fast and made the unhappy face, I looked behind to see if there was a car and nope, it was just me all alone in the bike lane. So I was speeding through the school zone...but I was only over by 2 km in a 30km/hr zone and there were no students around. I was really surprised it picked me up as we are way smaller than a car.

As a side point in another thread they were saying how can you see or enforce speeding on mix use trials, this is the answer put solar powered signs like these periodically along the trails with the posted speed limit.
I know, I know, it didn't stop me from going over but at least I was made aware of it. And on a heavy use trail others could call out the offender, when they see the sign make the unhappy face like that.

These ones don't have camera's, they depend on people to enforce the rules on themselves, oh sure every few month a cop car will hide out to watch, but normally the cars are pretty good at slowing down on their own.

There's a speed detection display on the ride to Avila Beach from San Louis Obispo, CA. It's on the rolling road when you miss the bike trail... Anyway, going down one of the rolling hills my wife hit way over the speed limit, just coasting. The electronic sign was flashing like crazy! Over coffee in Avila she was worried about getting a ticket in the mail like they do with the red light cameras in bigger cities. I assured her she was OK. No jail time for her since there's no bike license plate, and Avila Beach isn't exactally a big town...

Haha, that was not my speed! (Especially as taking out a pocket camera and taking a photo requires me to slow down). More irritating are traffic lights, named "Driver's Disciplining System" here. A radar at the junction detects, for instance, a car at > 40 km/h, and then the red light is automatically turned on for a while long enough to make the car stop. Or, the traffic light alternates between red and green every several seconds, so the car has to stop disregarding of its actual speed. Typically, a bike is forced to stop, too, and that's annoying.

Yet, as we talk on the 53 km/h, my brother hit 57 km/km on a derestricted Giant Trance E+ when he was riding with traffic on the flat during rush hours. He was actually faster than the cars! Oh, he's a candidate to get a ticket!

Try that with a state trooper hiding at the bottom of a hill, "but officer my foot wasn't even on the gas", his response, "yeah it should have been on your brake".

I don’t want to be a party pooper, but we should be following the laws and rules. When we race by people, other bikers and crowds without respect, it only hurts our cause. I‘m not referring to the vast majority of us who slow down and give warning as we approach slowly and give a nice jester of thank you it would go a long way. If we ride rail trails, unless there is no one around us then higher speeds may be appropriate. As e-bikers, we extremely fortunate to be mostly able to ride where analogs can go. Right now, it seems that we’re not all sure that this statement is true. if We get too cocky and start speeding past walkers, (young, elderly, some with small cartridges, and other bikers) coupled without an audible warning, is not only disrespectful but we bring negative attention to ourselves. If enough complaints go against, the authorities have to act and when they do, they may find a way to keep us out. With the towns being cash strapped, they’re always looking to raise money and maybe could find a way to have us register them asses an excise tax and whatever else they may dream up. Another issue is increasing the speed over what the law allows, could bring attention to us.
These are just my feelings and that we are guests and we should behave appropriately.

I managed to take a smartphone photo of my own speed read-out by the sign. 32 km/h (20 mph) was well within the 40 km/h (25 mph) limit.

We have similar signage in my village, I managed 24mph once on my non e full suspension mtb, I had a good run at it and it is downhill slightly. I regularly see keen road cyclists hit almost the 30mph limit. Most cars at commuting time illuminate 33-43mph, so us cyclists are still on the good side of the line !
