Have a class 3 ebike which I am satisfied with. But I want to go faster on my commute. I average 20 mph, but occasionally I get tapped out at 28 mph, and am wondering what is available on the market at top speeds in excess of 28 mph so I can average higher than 20 mph. Truth be told, I would probably only average 10 minutes faster to work at higher speeds, but I want the option. The Lunar Apex seems to fit the bill. I don't like the Vintage motor cycle look. I currently have a Stromer. Thanks!

Have you considered increasing the max speed with eBike tuning… what type of motor do you have?


 
When you start talking speeds like this, I would think part of a good plan might be asking yourself how far this bike needs to maintain that kind of speed. This is from a motor cooling standpoint, and battery amp hour standpoint.

For instance, most would want to avoid a bike that had smoke coming from the motor after a 35mph 3 mile sprint. As well, you would want to avoid a battery that was only able to maintain your target speed for 5 miles.....

Bottom line, there's way more too this than just a bike that's able to run in excess of 28 mph. That's much easier than you may know. You need to answer the questions for how long and how far too. That's the hard part.....
 
Based on running simulations on Grin's website you can expect to run over 1200W (probably less on a Bafang Ultra Mid drive model ebike) to sustain a speed over 25mph/40kph but I do agree that for compelling urban mobility ebikes need the capability to enable riders to cruise at speeds around 28-32mph to be compelling as car supplement transportation solutions in the US.

I think a serious commuting ebike will come along with the right mix of mid or hub motor power and battery capacity.
 
A 1000W DD hub motor would be able to do 30mph on long stretches.

Bafang Ultra on the Ultimate Commuter Pro is also very capable. I held 24.5 mph average including breaks over 12 hour period. The motor did not feel hot at all!!
If I exclude the breaks, I am sure the avg would be somewhere 27mph over 250 mile distance.

Didn't say it couldn't be done. This would be the kind of project where you would lead with your wallet....
 
I would do some calculating before spending money on a faster bike. Are you sure you can shorten your commute by 10 minutes?
How long is your commute? Are there long sections where you can ride a bike over 28mph?
If your commute is e.g. 20 miles and you now average 20mph you would have to average 24mph to gain 10 minutes.
Maybe you commute is longer and then your ”new” average can be a little less than 24mph but it would still mean your top speed really has to go up. (depending on how many miles can be covered at top speed)

Agreed. OP is asking for an above 28mph bike to shave 10 minutes off her commute. I haven't encountered many rides in my life where I would have the opportunity to sustain 29-32mph for more than a few minutes. To shave 10 minutes off a ride, you'd have to be doing that for 20 minute stretches. The battery drain alone would rule it out for anything sub 1000w! Then you encounter wind resistance. OP, dont forget about potential hearing loss at those speeds for that amount of time on a daily basis.
 
I would install a 52t or 53t ring . That would get you to 29/30mph as long as the battery is above 6-7% capacity.

I did that on my Nitro City and w/o a strong headwind it does 28-29easily. Is all from the motor torque and the big gear. No crazy pedaling needed.

With a slight tailwind it does 31mph. All for only 6k, much cheaper then a 10k Stromer.

But that Frey looks like it will outspeed all of them.
