Hub vs. Mid Motor Equivalence

Hi Everyone,

Looking to buy my first eBike/eMotorCycle. I am looking at the Sur Ron and Stealth-Bomber like bikes. The Sur-Ron is a 5400W Hub Motor, and the Stealth Bomber-like bike I am interested in has a 8KW or 12KW motor.

I searched and read about the disadvantages/advantages of both and it all makes sense. But a lot of the information pertains to smaller systems, in the 250W - 1KW range.

What I am trying to find out is if I have an 8KW hub motor, what is the equivalent in Hub? I know this is not a perfect queston given gear ratios are at hand, but given a stand ebike gear ratio (single gear in the back), what would be considered equivalent?

If this cannot be answered here is my ebike use case:
- Ride in the bike lane slowly up to some trails: assume fairly steep trails but not insane, maybe worst case 25% grade for maybe 300 or so yds.
- go up and down these trails
- Ride home.

I like the styling of both bikes but seem to lean a bit more to the Sur-Ron, but it is less upgrade-able.

Other questions:
- Are there motor upgrade options for Sur-Ron's mid-drive? I can't find a motor upgrade for it
- How is hub motors on heat dissipation? Can they take sustained uphill climbs? For how long? (any examples would be appreciated).

Thanks everyone,
-Peter

Sur-ron from Luna would be much better in this case.
Support for Stealth E-bikes in the US is quite minimal.
Luna on the other hand is doing fine and they are quite active. For the cost of 1 Stealth, you could get 2 or 3 Sur-ron bikes and from my limited experience, the bikes are well built for your kind of use.

At the price Luna Cycles is selling, it is an exceptional value.

ummm yeah off topic dood, but looks really nice. This is not for the trails.

Maybe the right term is enduro ebike?

Basically with a 12KW hub motor ... will I be able climb fairly steep stuff you commonly find on a mt bike trail? not insane but I'll be able to get me up the hill?

I like the Sur-Ron but there are no upgrade motors available. YOu can run the motor harder with an upgrades battery/bms/controller, but if you want to go higher, I haven't seen anyone make a higher-power motor. Also the cage where the battery sits limits the size of the battery you can put inside.

I'm not trying to go off topic or anything, but since you said e-motorcycle, have you ever thought about getting a Honda Super Cub and do an ebike conversion?
The Honda Super Cub has been proven to have a solid platform and it is quite sturdy.
I'm sure you can also find Super Cub frames on eBay or junk yard.

There are several ebike conversion kit available for the Super Cub.
Also, you can see people doing ebike conversion on YouTube.

Wow, that is a very cool conversion of the Honda Super Cub... any details on pricing and availability in the US?
