Hello from New West, BC

Recently bought a used Borealis Velomobile from the now retired Cambie Cycles. Velo has a Bionx 350w assist. Which is useful in our hilly area. Throttle is currently not working, appears wire might be frayed. Hoping to get it working for getting the Velo up the short horrible hills in our city. (San Fran city movies get filmed here).

Other bikes include a Surly Big Dummy, 1974 Apollo Deelite, couple other random city-ish bikes.

Guess while I'm at it I'll throw in a 60+ year bike I generally ride in local parade with from LBS.

Welcome to the site.
I can't say you are new to the hobby with that extensive collection. That Borealis Velomobile is a sight to behold!
Big Dummy was on my wishlist until I found a stretch cargo bike with a step through frame (I'm age 68).

Hopefully you are aware of Grin Tech down off of Powell? They are the most knowledgeable about hub motors and their inner workings around, anywhere. They probably can figure out what is wrong with your throttle.

However my experience with the BionX 350w on an OHM bike is that it will be woefully lacking in the power you will need to propel your Velomobile. Not to mention that the battery capacity is probably suspect if it is an older conversion due to storage treatment while the bike was at Cambie. Grin has many options that you can check into as a replacement that will do the job as you envision however. Plus just visiting them will be a good experience as they are really nice folks.

My son who attended UBC and his wife live in New West and I visit them as often as I can. Great city, Vancouver, with some really great food! And nice collection of bikes you have going there!

When I was buying the Velo I didn't realize it had electric assist in it, was planning to add it later. Will likely move away from Bionx down the road.

The throttle has a hall sensor inside, it is activated by a magnet and needs 3.5 to 5 volts DC to run the hall device, Likely the frayed wire is the issue, I’m in Ladner, I’d look around for a new throttle assembly from eBay or Amazon.....under $10 ish. It’s likely a simple fix ‘if’ one can open the unit easily....

There is a frayed wire leading away from throttle to console, which I suspected was the issue. Was either going to check with Grin or OHM in North Van, as they bought most the Bionx stock.
