A smaller front chainring will increase your climbing gear ratio... the same effect as a larger rear 51-Tooth cassette.
The motor torque will be unchanged and the battery range will change based on your PAS input and power level.

Is your bike the 2021 model? I see that has a 38 tooth front chain ring. Being the newer H-bike Yamaha drives, they've done away with the double front chain ring of the older PW drives.

That 38 tooth front ring is very likely the best compromise Haibike found between off road climbing ability and flat road top speed.
Yes it is the 2021 model was just wondering if I put a smaller front ring on would this help climbing needing less assistance so improving battery life not really worried about top speed just off ride ability

I believe in the end, motor torque is only going to get you so far up that hill. Maybe the Haibike Flyon with 120nm can deliver what you want.

Look at the last Bosch generation and that small front chain ring. With the torque available, it only did so much. I don't recall that drive being anymore a mountain goat then the contemporary Yamaha's or Brose's of the day. Only one way to find out is to actually try, but you'll have to do your own investigating as to what other chain ring will fit the Yamaha drive spider. Be careful too, of voiding your factory motor warranty!
