Google's Wild and Wacky "Conference Bike"

The conference bike also makes an appearance in the first episode of HBO's Silicon Valley, which is where I originally saw it. I think its like $12k when I looked it up.

If I went to interview for a company and they had a conference bike, I would be more inclined to work there.

Gus,
They have a Pedego fleet to commute between campuses. Does that make a difference?

When companies start making stuff like this, that's when you know they have too much money.
They are trying to inspire creative thinking. Bicycles have remained relatively stagnant over the course of history. Contrast with the wright brothers to space shuttle transformation.

American culture needs a fresh perception of bicycles to change stubborn habits.

Yikes. A corporation wants to inspire creativity, but within a pretty narrow footprint. Google is so entrenched. They always knew it was about control. Read that book about the early days at Google, doing everything to make people live within Google*.

Your views tend toward the simplistic, or the over-simplified. Bicycles might have 'won', but for cars, but we're here today, with a need for a different city from the suburban post-war city. People want to be able to bike and to walk, or they can't afford to drive.

The Goobike seems completely overdone, too symbolic, shambolic. What a great word.

I run 2 miles to the store and carry 10-35+ pounds back uphill. I try to be as car independent as possible.

What do you use your bicycle for?

Exercise. Six months ago I was on oxygen 24/7. Now I can ride reasonable distances. The market is ten miles. I'd like to move to a more bike friendly place. I do what I can.

It's great to be in peak shape. Why do you need an ebike? Do you want to be more like me?

I am pleased to see your improvement. My dad passed away from COPD.

I want an eBike to carry 50 pounds at a time. I typically go twice a week. Yesterday was a case in point. I ean 3 miles at sunrise. I needed something from the store, so I had to run the same path twice in one day. I am so conditoned to it that I feel no side effects. I simply do not have that much spare time.

Was the eBike your initiative or suggested as part of a physical therapy program? What lead you to an eBike?

I owned the ebike, started riding it as a scooter with the oxygen tank. Some stuff cleared up.

I’m really sorry about your father. A lot of us lived an era where people were very self-destructive, but they didn’t understand what would really happen. The COPD is irreversible and progressive, two things no one wants to hear. To some extent you must feel very motivated to stay in good health. Maybe that’s a legacy he passed on to you.

I can’t believe we can’t find you an ebike. Really no reason to exercise too much. There are some studies to that effect. I think you are following the prudent course. You don’t want to get too caught up in the details, of ebikes. The mid-drive stuff is pretty well the only way to go for hills. Some people use trailers to carry goods, or go with a cargo type bike.

Motorcycles are just so bloody dangerous. This stuff really makes a difference, if you go down that route.

COPD is like Alzheimer's. A long, painful process. I still have dreams about my dad on a weekly basis. My dad was on oxygen tanks for about 12 years. The final four months were absolute hell. And my sister is even a registered nurse in surgery.

I think the right bike will materalize in a year. I love running, so I do not mind. The short-cut to the store is along fire roads in a park. I only have that one short-cut. Bikes are allowed in the park. The longer way is on a street too busy to bike on. If the park becomes too sketchy, I may be forced to drive to the store. I have no other use for the bike.

I am just spooked by the cougar(s) in the park. Cougars have been shot before and are well known. All the urban fragmentation of their environment squeezes them into small corridors. Cougar population grew by 9% in Oregon last year. Calif. does not have cougar hunting to control cougar population like Oregon.

I found their tracks twice in the past 2 weeks. I now am very reluctant to run thru the park. We get county alerts on a weekly basis. Usually the cops publish the alert.

I avoided the park today. I ran in then opposite direction owards a new cougar sighting at 9AM (from county officials) ! The cougar sat on someone's porch for 15 minutes. A mother and 2 Cubs were spotted there last Sunday, but unreported.

mule deer only go near the grass field in park, which is adjacent to homes. Today, I learned mule deer avoid cougar habitat. However, I often see a herd of five deer a few blocks away from the park entrance.

I am really upset about people who feed deer. I run past a herd that always lays down in one person's front yard. The deer do not even bother to stand up on their feet when I run by. The deer look at me like they expect me to feed them, or something.

We chased a coyote away. The coyote regularly sits on top of the hill to watch the deer. I see people feed deer in the park. People do not realize that Cougars are opportunistic hunters. The lions will eat from your yard, if you make it convenient. Coyotes do not hide in the brush like Cougars.
