Front Hub and Bearing Problem

I picked up a clicking noise from my front hub. Took it apart and saw the race was damaged. Looks like overheated. Need replacement but wanted to go with sealed bearing set if I could. Anyone know of how to switch from loose bearings to sealed bearings on a 9mm setup?

I don't think there is a way they are two different designs. you would need to replace the hub.
I agree.

BTW - The damage to the cone nut may have been ultimately caused by heat but the root cause was lack of a quality bearing grease and/or loose cone nuts allowing too much play in the bearings. These classic bearing/hub setups are quite reliable but do require some periodic maintenance. I check mine for adjustment every few months by simply grabbing the rim and pushing back and forth. There should not be any play. I grease the hubs each winter.

With that much cone nut damage it's likely that the bearings are damaged as well. They are not expensive. I'd recommend replacement. Be sure to clean and inspect the fixed bearing race in the hub. A damaged race will tear up new bearings pretty quickly.

The good news is that replacement parts are readily available and can be installed and adjusted with a couple of open end wrenches and a cone wrench. Your LBS may have these parts in stock.

I use a waterproof bearing grease for my hubs.

I have had this bike for 1.5 years. I am new to bike maintenance. I have ordered 1/4 inch ball bearings replacements. The inside of the hub looks good. I have the parts needed on order. For grease I have the Park Tool PPL-1 PolyLube 1000 Bicycle Grease. Should have it back together by the weekend.

You might find this classic Sheldon Brown article handy;

Seems like the only place to find replacement parts for the front hub is Juiced. Maybe if I can find out if the cone has a specific part number like CN-R083. I have sent Juiced an email with the pics of the parts needed. I hope they respond quickly and have the parts in stock. I had to wait 4 months for a replacement rear wheel last year.

That is one ugly cone; I shudder to think what it´s done to the race. Now I´ll have to go check
mine. Nothing like the joy of packing wheels.

Curious, what went afoul with your juiced rear whl? I had a 1st run CCS where all the spokes were laced from
the same side & would thus bind against each other wearing out the spoke bores. They fixed that on
later editions after I pointed it out, but I got nothing but ignored. Juiced accepted no responsibility whatever.
I´ll never do business with juiced again. The bike I have now is twice as good & cost half as much. Just get
another wheel or a better bike.

Try here,

They offer 21 sizes and styles. 9mm is on their list. Personally I'd stop by my LBS.

Both wheels are at the local bike shop getting the cones and bearings replaced and repacked. Juiced was going to take a week to get the parts to me. I had to buy replacement hubs with all the internals for $25 each. Good to have spares for future maintenance.

Update: Bike shop called no parts to rebuild such hub. They said only one cone needs replacing. I will have them repack the hubs and get them the new cone next week to install.
