Fat tire tread noise.

When you ride your fat tire bike on pavement or hard pack can you carry on a conversation with another rider or is the tire noise to loud to hear each other?

It's loud, but you can talk. You get some confused looks from walkers though, because they hear you coming from a distance.

I haven't noticed the noise being that much louder than the hum the motor makes, but I do notice the difference when I go onto the grass.

I have my aired ups all the way which seems to be less noisy. On my way to some Origin8"s soon.

There can definitely be a noticeable noise different between good quality and cheap tires. As most people have said, if you avoid the Kenda's, Chaoyang etc cheapies, you will hear and feel the difference when riding.

Good to know about the Chaoyang tires. Almost went with their Sandstorm model when I couldn't find the Supercell tires. Tread pattern looks identical. Got to wondering if Chaoyang was making the Supercell for Origin8 or just copying them.

I should clarify on the Chaoyang tires. They are one of 10 top tire companies in the world and make tires for everything from bikes to motorcycles to cars. Their low end, Chaoyang named ebike tires are not the best quality. I do like Origin8's brand, however which I believe is made by Chaoyang. Some of the Origin8's have same or similar tread patterns to the Chaoyang named tires but the construction of the rest of the tire is not as good. The Origin's are thinner but more durable, wear better and a lot less noisy.

The noise has to do with gaps in the tread near the center of the tire. If there is constant tread there, as in many/most street tires, the tire will be silent on pavement. A tread like a knobby has large gaps, and will make noise, and possibly even cause vibration, when on pavement. The faster you go, the noisier they will be.

To answer the OP's question about a conversation, if there's an issue, just slow down until the issue becomes tolerable.

Yeah I grew to like the 'angry bees' sound from going fast on my knobby treads...louder it was, faster you were going :)
