Enviolo Recalibration Discussion and Speed Calcs

So I noticed at and above 24ish mph that I was getting some pedal surging (a crank or two of expected resistance with one of low resistance, repeating but not at the same frequency). So I assumed it was a shifting issue with the Automatiq. Everyone else seems to claim a recalibration did wonders, so I gave it a try (you can do it in the TCU options or on the Enviolo app, I tried both). The calibration worked fine according to the software each time, but it seems like I've lost top speed. Not sure if the issue before was the shifter trying to "overshift" the transmission, but I used to be easy to 25 MPH at 80 RPM. Now it's more like 23 or so and I'm somewhere around 85-90 to get 25 MPH. I tried using the Enviolo app to put the transmission in Manual Mode. It shifted to all 9 simulated manual gears (you could hear it make the jumps each time) and feel the impact in the pedals. But same result on the "top gear".

Wondering if anyone else has seen similar? Planning to run it to the LBS tomorrow so they can take a look. Just hard to test since it's supposed to rain the next 3 days, but I know they mess with these more than I do.

For @scrambler since you've posted about this before. Enviolo does have a calculator tool they provide. https://enviolo.com/wp-content/uploads/enviolo-sprocket-ratio-calculator-v2-04_2020.xlsx

If I input 50T Chainring, 24T Sprocket, Tire Circumference at 2155mm (my Mission Control settings had it as 84.65 in), and 80 RPM, the tool spits out top speed in max gear ratio of ~41 (I'm assuming KPH since Enviolo is European). So that's 25.4 MPH. That also means I should be able to hit 28 MPH at 88 RPM. I was definitely not doing that. So something is definitely off a hair. Just testing on the road by my house, I think 88 was 25.5 or so top speed I saw. It's like I'm only getting ~350% range vs. 380%.

I do not have any data to back this up, but I also feel the recalibration took a small bit off the top end. I would guess 1-2 mph, which is similar to your numbers. That is while keeping the bike in the slow peddle setting. However, I also feel the shifting has improved after the recalibration. This is noticeable when going up inclines.

All of my observations are by feel though and can't be proven with data.

Please keep me posted if you learn anything interesting after the LBS visit.

I had the exact same experience. Which I still don’t get because the tech that built my bike said it forced a calibration after firmware update upon initial build. The only difference is he did it on a stand and I did it on road. Might impact it? I’m going back tomorrow (hopefully it’s done) to pick up supplies for mountain bike season (mainly spare tubes). So hopefully he’ll have some insights.

Top speed and shifting/cadence issue was belt tension related. The belt loosened a bit. Tech suspects new bike break in fun.

The pedal surging where occasionally the resistance drops around 25+ mph is still a thing. Although with the belt fixed, I put the gun in manual shift mode and didn’t feel it in “top gear”. I’ll experiment more this weekend, but it may be an issue with the software logic for shifting. Only thing I can think of if it only happens in auto mode.

This is why I dumped the 2 Vado's, they sucked with the "automatic" crap. Not ready for prime time......maybe next year

Anybody have any updates here? Still can't hit 28mph until I get to a cadence of 103rpm.

Just went out this afternoon and got up to around 43kph (cadence was around 102) as shown on the display - but I did have a bit of a headwind. Previously I have achieved around 47kph. Keep in mind that when I look at the recorded ride in the app, the 43kph max is recorded at around 47kph max speed......so there is a bit of a discrepancy between bike and app.

Yeah it looks like you are in the same camp as me, while a few other people are claiming 45 kph / 28 mph speeds at cadences in the 80s. This is a huge difference…
